2017 Bolt EV tapping noise

Picked up our Bolt this afternoon. All good so far. No longer making that tuk-a-tuk-a-tuk sound. So glad to be back to driving a sensible car that isn't making thousands of controlled detonations under my hood and spewing out exhaust and heat. Feels good to be back in the 21st century. Thanks again all.

I too have a 2017 Bolt, and it is making a strange clicking or tapping noise when I enter the vehicle. The noise generally stops when I press the brake pedal. When it started, it would click 5-6 times. Now it is up to 30+ times (tap-tap-tap-tap..). I have even had times where it starts tapping when I shut the car off.

I already know it is the iBooster. GM was unable to diagnose it the first time but I have a really nice video recording of it clicking and I had the hood up so I could feel around the brake cylinder and assembly and it was certainly coming from there. A wise individual on the Bolt FB page suggested it was the iBooster earlier.

Anyway, just wanted to post here so others knew the tap-tap-tap is a thing, and the iBooster is clearly marked with a label and bar code beside the brake master cylinder. Car goes in on Monday to a different dealer, and hopefully we can get that taken care of.

Thanks for sharing! I'm sure more people will come across this issue eventually and will appreciate the discussion here. Doesn't seem to be a very common problem thankfully.
 
An update. Dropped my car off at GM Dealer #2 on Monday morning. They did not touch it until Thursday (I called every day, but clearly this dealer had organizational and scheduling challenges). On Friday, they were waiting on a call back from GM about the source of the mystery tap-tap-tap noises. I stopped by and picked up the car. Not driving that damn Cruze any longer. It actually makes me anxious and irritated to drive ICE vehicles now.

Despite my anger with the dealer for a) not listening to me on Monday and getting the damn part ordered, b) not touching the car until Thursday, and c) still not having a full diagnosis or a repair plan on Friday, the service coordinators are great. They did their best to make sure I got my car, and get me a loaner, and keep me informed of the lack of progress. I hate to bash the dealership in my review because I don't want to adversely affect the service coordinators for what is obviously a problem at a higher pay grade. Grades: Service coordinators A, Mechanics C, Service Manager F

So my car still clicks (more than ever), but she's home and drinking the Meade of the Gods in my garage tonight. And that nasty troll wagon Cruze is back at the dealer waiting to ferry the next Yukon owner back and forth from his law office. Hope I have better luck on this next week.

Thanks for the helpful thread. There are more reports of the same issue at chevybolt.org (mraymondus's post and others). It may be a more widespread issue than GM or others realize, so I thought it might be helpful for me to report I have this identical problem. Perhaps it is worth a recall, or at least a service bulletin? I'll post on chevybolt.org as well. Mraymondus, thanks for your offer above; I'll email you for a copy of that audio clip.

Can anyone recommend a competent dealer in Northern California? Mine couldn't diagnose this issue, nor a connectivity issue with the myChevrolet app.

Our 2017 Bolt has also begun making this knocking noise. We're having difficulty with the dealership recognizing the problem. They won't accept our video recording to help with identification. Had to reschedule an appointment to try to talk directly to a technician.

It sounds pretty much identical to the sound posted earlier in this thread, which was fixed by replacing the Bosch iBooster.
 
My Bolt displayed identical symptoms and the problem was diagnosed as a faulty Bosch I booster. In California, the lead time for this part is six weeks, so plan accordingly.
 
The tech did hear the knocking this time and agreed it was the booster. Now we wait for him to contact GM for direction as they couldn't find anything in the system addressing the problem as a warranty issue. Were given no idea how long it will take to resolve. :(
 
Walter can you give me the full name and part number for the booster? I just got a 2017 chevy volt with the exact same problem. It makes the ticking noise when you open the door, and then it lasts for about half a block even after you crank the car and drive. Yes, the noise starts even before you crank the car "tic, tic, tic, tic".

Hi I am new to the forum and recently have also started hearing the "ticking sound" from my 2018 Bolt
I contacted the dealership and of course was told that they had "NEVER" experience the sound that I described (BIG SURPRISE)
I need to bring my car in so that the technician can diagnose it, (but I can't talk to the technician) The service writers cannot make a diagnosis or order a part without the technicians input
So the car has to sit there all day, and when I pick it up later I'll be told that they couldn't reproduce the sound that I was talking about..... (sound familiar, I think that we have all seen this movie before...)
So I guess my question before I jump through all of their waste of time hoops is:- Is it dangerous to drive the car with the annoying sound? And for how long can/should I put it off for?

As it's related to the brakes, which are pretty important, I wouldn't put it off for long. Safety first. There are a couple of videos in this thread featuring the sound and if the sound your car is making is like this, you can be pretty much assured this is your issue as well and can tell the dealer this is a known early Bolt EV problem.

Thanks Domenick for your input. I have booked the Bolt in to the dealership on Wednesday. So.... as they say, Let the fun begin!!
 
Hate to necro an old thread, but having the same issue here! On a 2017 bolt.

Anyone have any information on if it's covered in the warranty and costs?

Two days and another two days to do the installation, and they only broke one item under the hood........ so I guess I should consider myself lucky!!
