There's a kickback. The dealer is getting a ~$3k bonus for every car they sell in Cali (and the other Cafe states). That's why they are cheaper (t)here

Can someone expand on this?
CA prices are definitely lower than here.

What is the 3k bonus?
Dealer Cash?
Group Buy?

If we BUY in CA but register in another state do we still get the discount?
Looking to buy before year end....

Thanks!

That kickback is probably what the dealer gets from Honda.......not us.
I could not get any lower than those prices from anyone in SoCal right now.
I would not see why they would not give you those prices for out of state.

I think the $3k is a hidden dealer incentive to ZEV states and only residents in those states can get. This differs from Toyota where out of state buyers can get in state rebates. That allowed me to get a $4000 Toyota rebate and I live in TX.

Yes--the kickback goes to the dealer, and different dealers are passing different amounts back to the consumer.

Honda is trying to get credits by selling the cars in the ZEV states (California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Since a car only counts if it is registered in a ZEV state, those who live outside of ZEV states are not going to get the same discounts, even from a dealer in those states.

There's some good ZEV documents here: https://www.nescaum.org/topics/zero-emission-vehicles

Congrats!!
What color did you get?
Same 22k+ vin here too.

Anyone looking for one in SoCal contact:

Billy Kim @ Santa Monica Honda
Direct: 310 264 - 4975

He will do the same pricing.

First off, thank you to this great forum and especially to Cali65. Because he was willing to share his information, I was able to get this great price. I just purchased my white Clarity (VIN was 20K) at Honda of Santa Monica for $30,000 +TTL and doc fees. The dealership accepted it without issue and the whole process was very easy. I worked with the sales consultant, Ravel Boynton, and he was excellent. It was a remarkably quick, smooth and pressure-free transaction. They are certainly worth contacting if you are in the market for a Clarity or any other Honda.

I really appreciate all the input from everyone... But what am i missing???
I just cut and pasted from hondas website for lease specials (zev states)
"$209 Per month for 36 months. $2,299 total due at signing."

To be more specific, you can read the fine print
"Total monthly payments $7,524.00. Option to purchase at lease end $14,403.90"
So to get into a Honda Clarity you need ok credit to qualify for this special and these are the #s

7524+2299+14403.90+tax tags & title

Why is everyone overpaying for this car???
And why is this car not selling like hotcakes... Its cheaper to lease/buy than the Accord.

And if you "dont like leasing" then drop another $14403.90 over your lease cost and you purchased the car.

What am i missing ?
Why is this thread 37 pages long?

Not for California zip codes I tried, its $289. That is for base model.

If you buy it in those ZEV states, there is a $3000 dealer incentive plus you get $7500 as a tax credit. People in those states have negotiated around $28k for the base. There may be state rebates on top of that.

That sounds about right.
($289x36)+$2299+$14403.90 +TT&T
Sub $28k
Also, if you let the dealer eat the tax credit for your lease you don’t have to worry about coughing up the extra cash until tax day (hopefully your cpa is good).
And you can potentially get another EV in 2019 and take advantage of another EV tax credit.

I personally wouldn’t be able to get anything out of a $7500 tax credit when April comes so this is an almost $40k car for $28 ‍♂️♀️ A no-brainer.

Wait, the EV tax credit is only good for one use?

When they say “it’s a one time credit”, they mean per car, not per taxpayer. You can get the credit as many times as you can buy qualifying NEW cars, but you’ve got to be the original owner. Resale doesn’t get you the credit

Because I get $7,500 back on Federal taxes and a check for $1,500 from the State.

I paid $30.5k + taxes; so it's cheaper than a lease.

Cali65, I need to thank you too. I flow there to pick up my car. The sales manager Reza was very professional, he called me three times in two days to confirm my schedule, and waited for me at the door. They put a sold tag on my car. There was no waste of a single minute during the whole process. It took me 2 minutes to check my car and we went directly into signing documents, he did not even try to talk me into spending an extra penny.
I am back at home, a tiring whole day but it saved me a lot of meaningless bargaining with sales here in Bay Area, yet I am sure that they are not able to offer a price close to this range. I told them I would save the trip if they can give me a number close, they seemed not even willing to do msrp -3000.
