Hi all, I just read a post in a Chevy Bolt forum about using an inverter hooked up to the 12v battery to run a few items in the house during a power outage. I'm not talking about any of the fancy vehicle to home setups, just talking about running an extension cord into the house to run maybe the refrigerator, a light, and cellphone charger. Using the Bolt would be better than the Clarity since a gas engine wouldn't need to be running, but at least you could add gas to the Clarity. Would there be any danger to the car in trying to do this? What kind/size of inverter would be appropriate?
This was discussed at some length here, and perhaps elsewhere: https://www.insideevsforum.com/community/index.php?threads/successful-clarity-back-up-power.7363/ See what you think about that discussion. Certainly this is viable, and in fact, the ICE can extend operation if really necessary.
I used a 1000w inverter during the great Texas blackout last year. 15 hours running refrigerator and lights used about 1/2 of the battery charge.
