Glad you found the issue, maybe that one should be in the FAQ so others would know to look for a foreign object in the switch.

I was one of several that was carrying a wrench after having problems on a trip. But, after software updates last year we have not had any glitches or unexpected behavior and we just hit 30,000 miles.

We found the problem. Thankfully it's not faulty software or hardware. It was
....drum roll....
a STINK BUG was lodged underneath the button and the button literally would not move. We're relieved that we found this before getting the car towed (took some gymnastics to investigate, you wouldn't particularly notice the bug sticking out). Note that we'd tried a number of the things others mentioned: yes, the car moved forward in Drive, yes it would go into Neutral and Park. Just couldn't push that R button.

Is this a design flaw that a bug under the button could mess with shifting? At least we know it's possible now. Wouldn't have happened in our manual trans CRV.
How did you get the bug out? Was there a cover to access the back of the button?

We had a stink bug invasion of our travel trailer. Kind of innocuous little critters, but just so MANY of them.

However, I’m having trouble envisioning how one of the could physically block the REVERSE button. Not doubting the account, but they seem paper-thin fragile, and eminently squishable. Weird.

To those of you asking how we got the bug out (and did it make a stink about it!!):
To get a feel for where it was, sit in your car with it off. Press the Reverse button and look closely at the gap created. The bug was under the button and sticking out that gap just a tiny bit--you'd have to lean over the button with head against dash to see it. Don't ask me how it got in there--that gap only appears if the button is pressed. Could it have crawled in for the split second we'd have pressed R previously? My guess is that the area under the button is accessed from elsewhere and the bug crawled to that position. We got it out by sticking a pin through it and drawing it out (dead, it seemed). Thankfully, it came out easily.

How could something as thin and squishable as a stink bug prevent the switch from moving? Don't ask me. As MNSteve said, a bug in the design!

Just now as I was looking at the setup in order to describe it to you, I noticed what I think is a pine needle or some other bit of matter under the button. So things do get in there and, given our stink bug experience, that isn't a good thing. I blew on the pine needle and it went...somewhere. I can no longer see it and hope it didn't end up in the switch. Using compressed gas or similar to blow out material that's under the reverse button might not be the best solution if, for instance, the stink bug was squarely under the switch and we couldn't pull out all its pieces (I'm picturing tweezers, but at some point, you'd not be able to grab crumb-sized pieces of any matter that you can't even see under the switch). I think I'll routinely roll up a piece of tape, sticky side out, and collect whatever I can reach under there.

ps I've not been getting notifications of all your replies, despite this being a watched thread. Pardon the delay in my reply.
