I Drove about 60 miles in heavy wet snow last evening. After about 20 miles I got the warning message that the auto braking system and smart cruise control were disabled. I thought that the normal cruise control would still work, but could not figure out how to turn it on.


The other thing I noticed was ice building up on the led headlights distorting the light beam. It was about 32 degrees F. I suspect that if the headlights were incandescent, there would have been enough heat to keep the headlights clear.

It was the worst snow conditions I have driven in for a long, I thought the Clarity handled very well.

Does anyone know how to get the standard cruise control working when the radar unit is Wblocked?
 
Not trying to sound like a smart a$$, but honestly in the driving conditions you describe, using the cruise control in any mode is not recommended.

Well i thought it could be a safety feature.

At the point where it quit working, it was snowing but the roads were clear due to the moderate temperature and salt laid down earlier.

Later in the 60 mile drive when the headlights started to cover over the roads were slick and it was defenitely time to use the cruse control.
 
If the radar’s face is clogged with ice, slush, snow, mud, or anything else it won’t work. This shut down of the system in itself is a safety feature. You can choose to pull over every time it shuts down to clean the accumulated stuff off the H emblem to reactivate, or you can choose to ignore the dash warning and just drive the car, understanding that the features are temporarily disabled.

Having same issue today in Northern AZ. The cruise control is switched to “normal” by holding the following distance button down for a couple seconds. A box with the text “Cruise Control” will illuminate between the ACC and LKAS indicators. You then set speed as normal (our car does not indicate the set speed like it does in ACC) and the “CRUISE CONTROL” box will become bolder. The attached photo shows how it looks with the normal cruise set. It’s a goofy system. IMG_0229.webp

Happens in winter all the time here from salt on wet roads. Radar sensor and camera get obstructed with dirty water spray or ice. Useful to override as others say above, but it is easy to get used to it adjusting speed so be careful.
 
Hey, another CNY Clarity owner. Drive up on the Tug Hill in winter for skiing. I have had the problem you had. Wet roads but snow gloms on to the H which covers a sensor. I do worry about the lights getting covered with snow. But haven't been out after dark in heavy snow.
