Wheel well plastic fastener

Does anyone know how to remove this sturdy but unusual looking plastic fastener? It is found inside the wheel well holding the plastic liners to the car body.

I wanted to remove the plastic liners to see what's underneath before attempting to apply some sound insulation material in there.

Some of those fasteners are a one time use and this might be one of them. Best to order a couple of replacements before:

and investigate the operation before dismantling the originals (part #s 1042AA and 1043EA both at .39 cents each)

No doubt it was designed to snap on during assembly but the hex suggests that it can be unscrewed to remove.

It's a push-on the first time it gets installed, although it can be snugged up by a little
turning afterward. Since it usually goes onto a threaded stud, you *should* be able
to unscrew it -- and if you're careful you won't mangle its innards. It's not strictly
threads inside, more like a bunch of flexible plastic vanes that grip whatever goes
through, but will sort of behave like threads if you're careful.

If the stud isn't threaded but has a lot of parallel ridges like a ring-shank nail,
then you're stuck with just pulling it. But I doubt you'll find that.
