The other thought would be to rotate them about when the front tires are worn to the point of being uncomfortable with the tread depth, then rotate once. When the near fresh rears that are now in the front wear to the point of being uncomfortable, buy a new set.

I guess the safety of this depends on what your definition of uncomfortable tread depth is but you can end up with some rather unpredictable handling characteristics with unbalanced grip front to rear especially on wet roads or other poor traction conditions (kinda like a less severe version of driving with lunch trays under the rear tires... The back tends to come around rather quickly).

You waste less time rotating, waste less rubber as the tires to break in to the new positions, and reduce the risk of damaging the wheels.

It is definitely more convenient to rotate tires on an ICE car while you're changing the oil but it's still an important maintenance item for both safety and handling balance that many people neglect.

I've never damaged a wheel rotating my tires but it's also something I do myself. I can absolutely see how it's a risk at some mechanics or tire shops... so many of them are absolutely careless! I've had enough bad experiences that I've given up trying to find a good mechanic and figure I have a better chance of doing it right myself (even when I don't know what I'm doing)
