Very early thoughts on 2023 SE (took delivery three days ago)

The worst part of it is that it just turns off abruptly and regen braking causes some pretty hard deceleration. Really with it would just ding and let you know it's defaulted to standard cruise.

Totally agree - I do not like the 'sudden off' design that has me pressing for the accelerator to halt the braking. I'd even be okay with some obnoxious sounds notifying you that regular cruise has been activated - whatever gets our attention while switching to regular cruise.

I noticed when they went to the 2.0 trims on the Signature and Iconics, I did not see ACC on the online configurator. When I ordered my car, it was before the 2.0 trims and ACC was listed as part of the Iconic trim.

You may be on to something here, my Mini was starting production at the time these changes came in, perhaps supply of parts had stopped and they changed my build so that my delivery wouldn’t have been compromised and I would be stuck in Quality Control? Looking for logic as to why this change happened, but it could just have been a screw-up

For you new 2023 owners, please report back how adaptive cruise performs in varying light situations - sunlight low on horizon shining into windshield, shadows flashing by, etc. The other morning I found out adaptive does not function in light fog. It was such a light haze I hesitate to even call it fog, but adaptive crapped out in it. EDIT: It will probably take a few weeks of driving before you get a good feel for how well it performs.

Honestly the ACC is better than I thought it would be after hearing so many bad comments about it before I got mine and tried it.

I like the way it handles certain situations…for example, if someone cuts you off and it’s not an emergency distance, the car will gently coast to make room between it and the car in front. I expected it to regen or brake hard but it’s pretty smart and comfortable they way it adjusts.

And let’s clear the whole direct sunlight thing…I live in SoCal and the sun did disable the system once BUT it was sunset and I was driving directly at it. Other than that, the sun is just fine.

People are making it sound like it doesn’t work if it’s just a sunny day…not true!

My MINI was ordered on May 3 with a mid-June build date and I was told “All of the active stop and go components are restricted, not available” so it was removed from my order.

Thanks, that explains a lot. Any news about your delivery?

I also live in socal and find the ACC to be pretty awesome. It behaves pretty closely to how I drive. I've changed the default follow distance in Bimmercode to 2 bars because I find the 4 bar default to be too far.

I have to change the follow distance to the shortest possible or I'll get honked at, cut off, and just generally have a miserable driving experience. The northeast is a different breed of driver. :D

Same on SC interstates. The shortest follow distance still leaves plenty of space to be cut off. I'm trying to learn to be more patient...but I still tap the pedal to close the gap when someone is vectoring to cut me off when there is plenty of space behind me. :-)

It's just not interstates. People (who don't drive Mini's) seem to think that any multi-lane road allows them to go any speed they want. I suspect that they never look at their speedometer. Or perhaps they believe the rules of the road don't apply. Just another reason why I prefer blue highways.

Don’t forget that people who drive large cars, whether consciously or subconsciously, disrespect those who drive small cars.

That's okay. I disrespect those who drive (unnecessarily) big vehicles. Most of them don't need a gross vehicle - they've either been hoodwinked by the auto industry or they believe a gross vehicle somehow enhances their self-perceived inadequacies. Don't get me wrong, some people actually need a large vehicle - families with twelve kids, tradespersons who use their vehicle for work. They don't drive like they own the road.
