Tuscon Envy

I find myself double-taking at Hyundai Tuscons lately, with some serious pangs of envy. I was very confident in my decision that the Kona was big enough for me when I bought it, but now... Man I wish Hyundai had put this powertrain into the Tuscon instead. It just looks less cramped in the back seats and cargo area, and its a bit taller - might have a better view of the road. Looks like about 300lb difference in curb weight between the base ICE versions, so I don't think the range would take *that* big a hit.

Anybody else have these developing concerns about the size of the Kona?
 
Nope, it replaced a Prius C, and is slightly larger than that one. Don't want it to take up too much room in our garage. We have another larger SUV, and use that when we need more room. The Kona works great in city parking lots. Perfect size for us. The front (1st class) is just right for us. The rear (coach) may be a little tight, but we don't spend much time back there.

I totally relate to your dilemma. Hubby and I seem to be pretty fickle having bought a Kona EV and then six months later we bought the Soul EV due to comfort concerns primarily. At first the Kona EV seemed okay for size and comfort, but coming from have a C-Max Phev and a Lincoln MKC, the Kona got smaller each time we drove it. lol Kia and Hyundai have some lovely SUV's. Just go slowly with your decision making. We ordered our Kona EV sight unseen after having a short test drive in a regular Kona. It is probably the dumbest decision we have made in the realm of car buying as I do think we would have had second thoughts about the size of the Kona EV if we had taken a couple of test drives which is our usual practice before buying. We didn't care for the Niro EV and the Soul EV is turning out to be a gem. We are just leaving for the Gulf Islands for a little holiday with lots of stuff and 2 dogs in the Soul EV. I will report back later. lol

I came from a 2009 Scion XB which people who knew me referred to as my clown car based on how much stuff I could always get in it. Even with the front seats all the way back, I didn't worry about the leg room in the back much. We also have another larger SUV as well, a Honda Pilot, that we do most of our family driving in at this point, but i still on occasion need to transport the kids.

The Soul didn't look a whole lot bigger - is it? I wouldn't say I made a bad decision or anything - I still have no regrets. I just can't help but wish it was a bit bigger.

We had an xB in the past. Great car! And you're right, there is a huge amount of space in that car. It's like my wife's purse, a lot more room than it looks like from the outside. [emoji12][emoji1787]

The Soul EV has much higher ceiling/roof and lots of leg room for passengers compared to our Kona EV. For things like cargo (dog crates for us) it makes all the difference in things fitting versus scraping the roof liner. So I think the higher roof makes it seem twice as big, but probably in theory it is likely only a bit larger. It's all in the design and how it is efficiently laid out. The design of the front doors is more like our old C-Max which had good design for getting in and out of i.e. wider. Also the front seats can go lower and higher than the Kona. Love that the Soul has front passenger electric seats as now lack of would be a deal breaker for us. We just charged up for tomorrow and heading to Galiano and the range is 486 kilometers/302 miles. No chargers on Galiano as far as we know so. I think the Soul does beat the Kona is all ways other than a little sway on fast windy curves. But people either love or hate the look of the Soul. I have watched reviews of Soul EV where the reviewer says it is identical to Kona in performance, but they would hesitate to buy due to the boxy style. Whereas the Kona is more neutral and blends in with the other cars. I like the funky look.
 
I must admit that I was alarmed at the tininess of the car when I picked it up after just a brief test drive. My last two Priuses met that essential need, space to stretch out for a snooze on the ferry. Now that BC Ferries doesn't allow remaining on most car decks, and I haven't spent a night in the car since a cold one on the Palouse 25 years ago, the Kona turns out to be the ideal size for a man and his dog. There's plenty of space behind the rear seats for a Boston terrier and his bed. But as a utility vehicle capable of hauling furniture or campers it would never do.

I don't get my car until later this week but I do have some slight concerns regarding the size. My dog and her crate travel with me to work and back most days, that's no issue. It should be plenty big for weekend trips to the family cottage with my wife and the dog crate and all our stuff. It should be big enough for me and my buddy to load up all our RC car gear for our weekly races.

That said, I will be putting a trailer hitch on it for my cargo carrier from my CMax. Will also be keeping the CMax as a winter beater and in case we need more space. The CMax might also be used on long haul trips where I don't want to stop for an hour every 3 1/2 hours.

I put on about 40,000 km a year, I'm sure the Kona will do at least 35k of those. I don't wish the powertrain was in the Tuscon, I think the Kona is a much better looking vehicle and with it's smaller size has a much greater range than the Tuscon would have.
 
I removed the moulded plastic tray under the rear floor cover and move the cover to the lower section. This improves the boot capacity quite a bit and can easily handle one of the larger "Clever Crates" (collapsible crate) as an organizer.

It is not spacious by any means but we do get great efficiency to offset the lack of space.

That was pulled out the first day I had the car- I found that styrofoam was a complete waste of space.
