Things to know when picking up our Kona Electric

I'll be picking up a new Kona EV Ultimate tomorrow.

Other than checking for blemishes and such, are there any things I should check or test before leaving the dealership? Anything I should try on a test drive before taking possession?

Congratulations on joining the Kona Electric club. You're going to love driving this car. Here are a few things to check:

1. Make sure it's got a "full tank" of kWs :)
2. Make sure you get all the owners manuals (one member of this group didn't)
3. Check the paint quality on the roof (I checked everything except the roof and it is very poorly painted - I wish I'd known before I drove it home)
4. Make sure the rear hatch latches easily (they tend to be not correctly adjusted from the factory). Open and close the hatch and make sure the car thinks it's closed.
5. Check the headlight aim (the factory seems to not be adjusting the height correctly). You'll know if it's wrong because you'll get flashed all the time.
6. Make sure the dealer sets up and activates BlueLink.
 
When I picked up my Kona I didn't notice a small tear on the steering wheel fabric, probably caused by unwrapping the protective plastic covering with a knife.
When I brought it back months later the dealer was very good-hearted and covered the cost to repair, but something to watch out for.

BLUELINK is the weak link in this vehicle. The $Stealer also had trouble setting up mine upon purchase. It took 2 days - and frankly, is STILL buggy. Remote START using the APP says it "failed" ... when in fact it STARTED.
 
Thanks for all the help. Picked up the car yesterday and so far it's great, though not perfect. Driving 90 miles home from the dealer on congested freeways was an incredible experience, between the adaptive cruise control, lane keeping warning and HUD with blind spot indicator.

I had installed the BlueLink app and created an account before going to the dealer. He linked it up with the car and it is working fine.

Couple of questions:

Is the speedometer subscale on the cluster always km/h, or is there a way to make it mph?

Under the cargo area cover is a black styrofoam tray with lots of intriguing compartments, all empty. Am I missing anything? I have a cargo net and the usual fluff - cargo tray and first aid kit.
 
You should have a tire repair kit - compressor and gunk, a tow hook and a trickle charger. Some markets get a Type 2 charging cable as well.
I would have thought the dealer would set the car's units appropriate to your location, the US I assume. It's in the cluster menus accessible by the steering wheel buttons when in 'P', if that does what you want.

I assume the 110v Level 1 charger is the "trickle charger." Yes, got all those, in the tray below the one I was asking about. So still wondering what that tray is there for. Probably reduces road noise, anyway.

Yes, and everything is in MPH, but when I select the Speedometer Subscale option it shows in km/h.

My speedo is in kph but when I push the sub scale it displays mph under the kph - user settings/other.

The tray is for your stuff! And if you remove it, you can lower the floor.

The whole idea of the subscale is to display the speed in the other units, for when you cross the border.
 
Yes, remove the floor (completely), and take out the top foam tray. Store that foam tray in your garage attic for 13 years, then discard. Reinstall the trunk floor by sliding it into the grooves on the sides of the trunk, about 3 inches lower than it was before.

That works nicely, thanks. OTOH many of the little pieces of junk I took out of my old car might fit into it. I'll have to play with it.

I've been wondering why the charge cable comes in a case that could hold three of them. Since I expect to use it rarely, I'll probably leave it where it is.

Curious what year, trim level and region you are in ?

Curious did you get a top foam tray on your 2020? As I did not on mine just the bottom foam tray. Not that it really matters as I tossed the bottom tray to make room for a spare tire, jack, etc.
