The BlackFly's 25 mile range is a US government flight restriction. Canadian rules allow it to go a full 40 miles. Interestingly, the "ballistic parachute" is optional. Let me think, do I want a parachute or not on an aircraft with just a little better gliding capability than a rock? Clearly, the people responsible for naming this interesting craft are not from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where black flies don't have a positive connotation.

I wonder how much redundancy is built in. I read the flight controls are triple redundant. Obviously it has 8 engines; but how many are needed for recovery or sustained flight? Does the power generating system include redundant generators or batteries? At least they didn't call it the NoSeeUm.
