@Bruce M. , are you ready for a power outage? Is your car fully charged? Do you have a small inverter you can connect to your 12V battery?
I carry a small, 300 W, sine wave inverter with two USB ports. The 12V socket is rated at 120 W so the inverter is never over subscribed. It also solves the broken USB cables in the rear seat (doggies.)

Oh yeah, I made sure the car was charged, had a backup battery for my phone and was generally prepared for a power outage. Happily, it hasn't been too bad near me, and my power only went out for an hour overnight -- and the worst is probably nearly over by now. Lots and lots of rain, some streets closed due to flooding, a bit of debris blown around, but the wind never got too strong here, so all is well. The intense rain did, alas, reveal a small roof leak, but it's happily pretty minor. But living in an area with both hurricanes and volcanoes, one does need to take emergency preparedness seriously!!!

By the way, thanks to RP for thinking of me! We're definitely on the downhill slope, happily. Just minor issues for me, but a neighbor had some flooding with the intense rain (15+ inches in the past 24 hours, per the closest official rain gauge to me). For me this was a good dry run for a more heavy-duty storm, which will likely happen sooner or later.

Glad to hear it was OK for you. Hawaii is a fav place for us to visit. We go to Maui pretty well every year. And a few years ago we were there just after a major storm and saw what flooding can do. The beaches were covered in debris which was washed into the ocean. Took a couple years to clean up. And the fire tragedy in Lahaina will take a lot longer.

Have visited most of the islands, except the big island. Maybe one of these years. It is truly a beautiful place. And we always feel safe there.

You should visit the Big Island! It's beautiful and charming in its own way, and a bit less overrun with tourists than Maui. And Hilo has the mellowest, most relaxed airport you will ever experience.

Yes, that is what I keep hearing. We'll do it one of these years. Maui for us, is a beach, snorkelling, sun tanning, relaxation type of vacation. But we often do adventuresome exploring ones like our NZ trip earlier this year, with lots of hiking. We did that in Kaui, too, a number of years ago. We avoid Oahu and Waikiki now, which is just too crowded and busy for us. But overall Hawaii is a very beautiful place.

Lots of hiking and snorkeling opportunities here, especially if you like sea turtles! I can point you to a hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that I guarantee is like nothing you've ever experiences. Okay, I will take off my Tourism Promotion hat now!!!!

Thanks, will keep that in mind. Speaking of turtles, lots around Maui where we go. But so are the sharks (Tigers). A couple years ago, a snorkeler was taken by a shark while we were there!
