Drive Modes: Do you have to be completely stopped to switch from one option to the other [ normal-> sport-> eco ] ? I see only one page in the big manual (5-48) and this is not discussed. I'd hate to do damage if I switch on the run.

It wouldn't damage it. You can "shift" most modern cars to reverse while you're driving on the highway and nothing will happen (some may turn on the reverse camera on screen though )

It seems odd that auto-hold would apply if the car is in reverse.. Also...gas?

I cracked my car up on day 2 because I reversed with auto hold on. Yes, it applies in reverse!

Taking my vehicle in next Thursday for that squeaking noise I was describing a few days ago. It seems to be getting more audible and is actually getting pretty embarrassing with the warmer weather upon us. Nothing quite like driving though a parking lot at low speeds while making a squeaking “rusty bearing” noise and having pedestrians turn and expect to see a 92’ Le Baron, but instead see a state-of-the-Art 2019 Electric vehicle.

If anyone else experiences this, please let me know. It’s a very high-pitched and consistent squeak any time you are driving at low speeds (sub 30/40 kmh) It becomes louder when you regen and disappears completely after you surpass 50 kmh or so.

It sounds like it’s either coming from the brakes, wheel bearings or electric motor itself. I don’t believe it’s the brakes as I should have sufficiently burned them in over the last week or so. I did this by accelerating to 80 or so, then firmly engaging the brakes -
Not to the point where smoke would come from the tires but enough to stop the vehicle extremely quickly. I’ve done this several time and the squeaking noise is clear as day still!

Weird, that's what happened to me in my Focus when the brakes were TOO worn..My guess would be rust build-up. I had constant squeaking that got faster as I accelerated, until it was inaudible at higher speeds.. As weather got warmer, I discovered it was still audible with the windows down, but just at a higher pitch (maybe I was driving so fast the sound was behind me hahah). Anyway...mechanic said I still had 4mm left and that it was a tie-rod issue. Sigh, it's hard to find good help these days.. It was definitely not a tie rod (that would only squeak over bumps), and my inner brake pad had less than 1mm left when I inspected it myself. I suppose once I get my Kona, I'll use the brakes a couple times per week on purpose.

Yes, the exact same issue occurred with my Kona EV. I was at the grocery store on a hot summer day and I loaded my trunk with groceries. When I went into the cabin to drive, I received a warning light that the trunk was still ajar. I went out and closed it harder...went back inside...same message. Hmm...I drove off thinking it was a sensor issue and my instrument cluster was blank...completely blank... Like yourself, I used the heads-up display to see what my driving speed was. I went home, turned off my car, unloaded the groceries, and when I went back to my car and turned it on, everything was fine! I went to my local Hyundai dealer yesterday to report the issue. They suggested I keep track of it and to let them know if it should happen again. I'm glad (sorta) that another Kona EV driver is reporting the same issue. I always think it's just me.

Another issue I've had is when plugging in my iPhone X using a cable and then placing it on the self-charging pad, the entire display (8") goes blank and my iPhone does as well. This has happened to me twice. I also notice that the phone tends to get very hot, causing the phone to have very odd behaviors until it cools down. Hmm...

Just noticed something a little annoying this morning.
In the back cargo area, I always used the cargo tie-down net. I heard something rolling around on Friday which I thought was off as everything is usually nicely secured. I noticed one of the little "metal" hooks that the net clips into was broken. Upon closer inspection, they're not at all metal. Just crappy plastic painted chrome. I've attached photos.

I wonder if that'll be considered warranty or if they'll just assume I was carrying something too big and they broke. Guess we'll see!

That's disappointing.. They couldn't fork out the extra 50 cents for metal ones? ugh.

Well here's something I just noticed that I do not like: my radio gets serious interference from the electric motor. I was listening to AM and when I accelerated (and to a lesser extent regenerated) there was audible electrical interference with the radio signal. You know when you put a hockey card in your spokes on a bike? It sounded like that, only with oscillating interference instead of cardboard ratta-tatta-tatta. Not good.

I can definitely see that.. Whenever I drive near the streetcars in Toronto, I can actually hear the sounds of their motors winding up through the radio as they accelerate.

A of times lately I had a situation where both the air conditioning and the heating were on at the same time. It was a warm day and I noticed it was getting warmer, looked over and both were on but the heater seems to be winning the battle. Anyone else have this happen? I wasn't in auto mode at the time.

It was probably the auto-defogging feature. The most efficient way to defog is with the air conditionner, because it draws moisture out of the air. You can condition air with heat as well

No issues with my Kona EV.

Two reasons, however, for posting on this thread (first item isn’t pertinent to this thread but I don’t no where else to post it and it’s not worthy of a new thread).

1) Consumer Reports finished its review of the Kona EV. The Kona is now their number one EV pick, tied with the Prius Prime with both receiving a score of 78.

2) Consumer Reports one gripe— the headlights. In particular the reviewers didn’t like the low beam headlights scoring them a 1/5. Interestingly this isn’t an issue I’ve seen raised here.

For the record, it was Consumer Reports preliminary review of the Kona EV back in April that got me really thinking about an EV purchase. The review was so favourable that it probably accelerated my purchase of an EV by two or three years. That, plus an increasingly unreliable Honda minivan and $16k in rebates available at the time here in B.C.

I believe that I read/heard somewhere that the halogens are crap and the LEDs are great on the Kona. Really seems to be the case.

Hm, I wonder how bad they are.. as most test drives are in the day and in Ultimate edition Konas, it's hard for someone buying a Preferred (here in Canada) to know what they're getting out of the headlights until they buy it. I wonder if it's easy/expensive to replace the stock halogens easily enough with LED once I get my Kona.

I know hitting the "P" Button while driving does nothing other than warning you that you have to stop before switching.

I accidently hit it the other day. So most likely the same will happen if you hit "R".

I don't have my Kona yet, but I believe that I read somewhere that if you gently let your foot off of the accelerator pedal WHILE holding onto the left regen paddle, you can come to a stop smoother than just by the paddle alone. Has anyone tested this? When I test drove it, I found it was a pretty abrupt stop using the paddle alone.

When using the brake pedal, does is just use friction brakes, or is there regen going on as well? I saw someone say that there was a weird lack of braking while the car was switching from regen to braking with the pedal depressed.

If you still have some throttle on while applying regen, it simply modulates the regen.

The brakes apply regen alone until it's necessary to engage the friction brakes. There can be some grabbiness when that happens. In general, slowing or gradually stopping with the brake pedal should be just as efficient as using the paddle.

R gives you a different message I believe "shifting conditions not met". I tried both when I bought the car- the salesman thought I had a screw loose
Note: I tried this at driving speed (50 km / hr) not sure at a lower speed what would happen.

Well, Ontario so...
I have had in winter mode since delivery. I charge to 100% . I drive 90 kmh or less for 80% of driving. But it is 360 almost always. I also tend to get a kilometre per projected kilometre so the "guess-o-meter" is fairly accurate. I can only dream of 480 I think. Waiting for Spring and Summer to see if any magic happens. I'd love to hear from any Ontario or Quebec owners to see what their range has been. BC and California reports just depress me!

Hi Wildeyed, I just realized the reason you're likely experiencing a reduced range. The colder the battery is, the slower the car can accelerate (and the less the battery can take back in when using regen), so winter mode uses some extra battery power in order to keep itself warm, to have the car performing 100%, thereby decreasing your range. If you turn it off once the weather gets cooler, you should see your range increase, though at the sacrifice of strong regen and quick acceleration.. So regen will be weak until the battery warms itself up. All of the details can be seen here

Some mornings, always mornings, the shifter buttons are very sticky, sludgy when depressed and the recoil is slow too. It's like when you spill juice or pop on a keyboard. Other times it's nicely clicky and responsive. Has anyone else experienced this?

Did you get a warning on the digital display telling you that the Shift Button is stuck? This happened to me today for the first time (My Kona is 3 months old). It is proving quite hard to get it to go into reverse. It feels like the Reverse button is popping back up properly after it has been pressed. Like you< i never have sweet drinks or the like in the car so this is not the result of a spillage. Bit concerned/disappointed at having an issue like this so early on and hoping I am not going to find Hyundai to be a quality concern.

It is proving quite hard to get it to go into reverse. It feels like the Reverse button is popping back up properly after it has been pressed. Like you< i never have sweet drinks or the like in the car so this is not the result of a spillage. Bit concerned/disappointed at having an issue like this so early on and hoping I am not going to find Hyundai to be a quality concern.

I never got any such prompts, I think because it did shift properly, just in a sludgy way. I've certainly gotten prompts saying "hey, you already shifted" when I've accidentally pushed twice. By the way, I haven't had the sludgyness lately either. *Knock wood

You cracked me up.Lucky you have't needed to use yours! Pickup a Big Rig Sound Air Horn Kit, at ~150db will certainly tell people you're present.

I'm with Wildeyed on this one. I think the AutoHold is a legacy from Hyundai's gas-guzzlers. We don't need it because we have LeftPaddlePull, which does the same thing, doesn't it?

Depending on the speed, the regen3 + paddle may,or may not work has been my experience. Have experienced situations where the same speed,or conditions won't activate kinetic braking/stopping using the same combination. SOOOO, I am thinking I should use that auto hold if I need to stop quickly. You guys are so helpful
