Just picked up my SE yesterday and I’ve noticed this slit, a bit less than a CM, nearly perfectly vertical and centered, leading me to suspect it’s supposed to be there, but wanted to check to see if others had the same thing.

That looks like a crack to me. Note the uneven blistering of the surface on either side. it should be replaced.

That is not a crack. My '22SE looks exactly like that. Those are two buttons. That's not uneven blistering, that's a reflection from the glossy surface of the buttons.

That is the protective film over the screen. The dealer forgot to remove it. Carefully pull up each side along that slit and peel the film off. Its will tear down the middle as you remove each half.

I wondered if it was that, but didn’t want to monkey it up is that wasn’t it.

Lol can’t tell if you’re being facetious.

I thought about ordering the screen protector set off Amazon or Ali, but a month in and I can’t see any fingerprints or schmutz.

I generally prefer going without screen protectors and cases. I tend to be pretty careful and I’d rather have a few dings and scratches and enjoy the product as designed. But I can totally see the utility and peace of mind with protecting stuff.

I think screen protectors are mostly for devices that get rough handling, get dropped, or have hard instruments touching their screens. I get a screen protector immediately for phones and tablets. I don't think I'm going to drop the screen in my SE, and I seldom touch it. Covering it would be like those plastic furniture covers that some people's grandparents used in the parlor.
