VW TDI's did get great mileage. They did weigh over a 1000lbs less however and were spewing a whole lot of nitrous oxide and other nasties. Monroe Engineering thinks the Honda driveline is one of the best designs they've destructed but the Toyota CVT is better off the line and eeks out a little more mpg. Again the Toyota is 600lbs lighter which makes a difference.

The first plug in Accord acted just like this. It would self charge when on level ground and downhill. Then use the battery on the to assist on uphills.

I've never seen a plug-in Accord.
