Rapid beeping when exiting the car

I've been experiencing this for the last few days, and I can't figure it out for the life of me.

When I exit my car and walk away, instead of auto-locking, it beeps about 6-8 times rapidly. I thought I might have left my keys in the car, or one of the doors are slightly ajar, but I haven't been able to pinpoint it.

Have any of you experienced this? I'd love any advice for how to debug this problem :)
 
I always keep them on auto, could there be a situation where auto doesn't turn off when the car is exited?
 
I get this when the car thinks the keys are still inside. This most often happens for me when I go to get something out of the trunk after exiting the vehicle. Even when I'm not that close to the car, while the trunk is open it often gives me the rapid beeps.
 
Do you have "walk away auto lock" enabled? I get this warning sometimes, and I think it might have to do with the car telling me it can't auto lock. It seems to happen most often for me when I'm at the back of the car with the trunk open - I think it's warning me that it's trying to lock the doors but the trunk is open.
 
You know what, that's definitely it. It's been when I've messed with the trunk. It doesn't lock after I walk away, but it seems like I might not be closing the trunk all the way? Or maybe it thinks the key is in the car (trunk?)? I'll have to experiment with it some more.
 
I haven't ever quite figured it out, but invariably, if I open and reclose either of the front doors, it works properly. I've learned to listen for the single beep carefully, because if it does the stream of beeps, unless I do the door open/close again, the auto lock on walking away doesn't work, and the car sits unlocked. I don't think it really is indicating that any door or trunk isn't fully closed.
 
No one seems certain, but many have experienced this over the past 6 months. Proximity to the car after closing the doors seems to be a piece of everyone's story. It almost always happens to me after I've left the car, closed the door, and then opened the trunk. I like the idea that the auto-lock system is trying to lock but can't. Generally, after I close the trunk, I then have to manually lock up - or at least press the lock button on the fob - to get it to lock the doors.
 
What's in your pocket? If you have too much metal (i.e.coins etc.) it can interfere with the radio transmission of the key fob.
 
I just stumbled across something on page 141 of the Owner's Manual that looks like it could be relevant:

Auto lock function operation stop beeper
After the auto lock function has been activated, the
auto lock operation stop beeper sounds for
approximately two seconds in the following cases.
• The smart entry remote is put inside the vehicle
through a window.
• You are located too close to the vehicle.
• The smart entry remote is put inside the trunk.
If the warning beeper sounds, check that you are
carrying the smart entry remote. Then, open/close a
door and confirm the auto lock activation beeper
sounds once.

It seems to me that Honda has designated this behavior as:
"Auto Lock function operation stop beeper"
Their last sentence is totally consistent with what I've experienced. When it occurs, for whatever reason, I just have to open/close a door and confirm the auto lock activation beeper sounds once. That is exactly what I have been doing, with the same result every time. It doesn't matter which door is opened or closed to clear the condition, just open/close a door.
 
It's definitely warning you that it can't auto lock, but figuring out why sometimes seems like a challenge.

If leave a door slightly ajar, I'll of course get this warning. If I close the driver's door then open the trunk with the wrong timing, I'll also get this warning (this sounds like it might be your case). Once in a while, I'll seem to get it for no reason at all--maybe it has to do with exactly when my wife exits the car versus me or something (she doesn't carry her key most of the time).

It does seem finicky, though.

I'm inclined to suspect that the system sometimes has mistakenly concluded that the key fob is still inside the car when the door is closed.
Regarding the door/trunk interaction, at least in my case, I couldn't possibly get to the trunk after closing the door before the beep warning occurs, since the warning beeping occurs within a second or so after the door closure. I'm nowhere near that fast, and it has occurred with no one else in the area.

That does seem like a reasonable deduction, and would account for the seeming randomness of it.

In my case with the trunk, it may have to do with the timing of my wife and I exiting the car; she's usually slower so I may have the trunk open by the time she closes the passenger door, which might explain it triggering pretty regularly.
 
I’m going with the “car thinks the fob is inside” because the only time it does the rapid beeps for me is when I bend over to get something from way in the back of the trunk. It’s never done it just walking away or just standing by the trunk when opening or closing in my experience.
