Purpose of trunk release key hole in rear

I love my Clarity but have been puzzled by the key hole behind the rear seat on the driver's side. If I use the physical key, it will pop open the trunk. However, I can't come up with a scenario where that would be helpful.

Does anyone know its purpose?

Thanks!

I believe it's a fail safe in case your remotes will not open the trunk or the electronic latch has failed.

Also a back up in case key fob and/or 12 volt battery go dead. There are also manual release backups for fuel door and charging door as well as key lock on deiver’s door.

I know this is a 7 year old post, but I just discovered that existed on my '21 Clarity today!! I'm glad I found your post.

If you can't open the fuel-filler door with the button up front, you need to open it manually from within the trunk. If you can't open the trunk electrically, you need to use the key to open it manually with the key in the lock above the left rear seat.
