Can you repair a run-flat tyre?

A mate who has an almost a year old Countryman with run-flats had a puncture yesterday. With run-flats being expensive, we were talking about repairing / vulcanising the punctured run-flat, I even looked at videos on YouTube that it is possible.

Has anybody done this? Or would recommend this?

We have run-flats and a road trip coming up and are thinking of buying a tyre repair kit or even having it repaired at a remote local tyre shop until we can buy a proper run-flat when we come home.

You can plug or patch a runflat if you catch it early (i.e. don't drive it flat), and if the puncture isn't close to the sidewall (same as a normal tire).

In my experience, it takes a little convincing at the tire shop to get them to do it, since they generally want to err on the side of caution. But after I explained that it was a slow leak that I caught early and it was never driven with less than 25 psi, they patched it no problem.

I've never plugged one, but it should be the same as a normal tire.

Yeah, what makes a runflat a runflat is the reinforced sidewalls. As long as you don't stress those out by driving on a flat tire I'd think they can be treated just like a normal tire with a leak. In fact, I'm fairly certain I've done exactly that with one of my previous MINIs and not had any issue. But as @chrunck points out, only with a leaking tire and not a completely flat one.
