Public Charger Etiquette

I nominate you for Sainthood, Hamid. I wish everyone was as courteous as you are.
I don’t mind EVs using the only free Level 2 charger close to me but it really bugs me when they leave the car there plugged in well after it has charged. Very inconsiderate!

I agree, we have a couple of offenders in our office complex as well. After talking to other EV owners I have run into in the garage is ask when they leave the office, so if all chargers are in use, and I see that one of the EV's plugged in usually leaves by 2 pm, then I can come down to the garage around that time and plug mine in, this has worked well. This has also had the added benefit of making others realize that there are other EV owners that want to charge.

A new etiquette is brewing in Ann Arbor that suggests plug-in hybrids should NEVER use public EVSEs because they can get around without a charge while pure EVs cannot. For this sentiment we must thank the 1 or 2 thoughtless plug-in hybrid owners who selfishly leave their cars in the space long after recharging is complete only because the EVSE spaces are so conveniently located.
You can also flip that argument around and say PHEVs need it more since their EV range is shorter and the longer range EV owners can plan ahead for their less often charges (unless they are out of town travelers).

So I think PHEVs and BEVs have the same etiquette “rights” to public chargers but the same responsibilities to move their vechicle as soon as charging is finished. That’s the real etiquette I’d like to see in public. You’re right, too bad a few rotten apples (on both sides) spoil it for the rest of us. (Of course the NY no parking spaces available thing obviates this)

Interesting... I'm new to this but just parked at a charge point that was free for four hours and $5 / hr after. This was on top of a $22 parking garage flat fee. This is a good strategy imo. Relying on people, even when they really do have good intentions, will always cause you grief. But trusting them to care about money is reliable.

My workplace has 4-hour limit on the public ChargePoint chargers. Before the 4-hour limit hits, a notification is sent to the owners to move their cars, or they'll be charged $10/hour. This tactic seems to work well in most cases. What pissed me off is some EV owners would not move the cars after they are full... Instead they just simply unplugged the charger to avoid the excessive charge fee. I reported this to the building security a few times.
