Plugging iphone with USB

Annoying quirk I just noticed when my phone is connected using the USB port. Apple car play is engaged. When I open any app (Google, Waze, etc) it shuts off the radio. I have to manually go to the "source" button and select "FM" to re-engage the radio. Is there a setting to change this? is it a Apple Car Play issue?
 
It's CarPlay doing this unfortunately. Plug into the right port (1amp) instead for the next week or so until the new Google/Waze versions come out with support for CarPlay (and you update your iPhone to iOS 12).
