You might want to consider the 2019 Honda Insight that gets 55 mpg with 151 hp and 197 lb ft of torque. It starts at about $24000 and that includes Honda sensing. It's also a beautiful car that is larger, more powerful, and handles better than the Prius, Niro, and Ioniq. It goes on sale soon (see the reviews online) so it might fit your needs better.

So they brought out the Clarity to be a piñata for the Insight?

Interesting development, SDGE is now offering EV-TOU5 plan which add $16 base per month, but drops super off peak to 9c per KW. Using this will require level 2 charging though, but this gives me another and viable option and not depend on unreliable 15c per PW at work. This also means I won't have to rush and install solar.
