  • Yes, but only if MINI added parental controls that block Go Kart mode.

I don't have any teenagers in my household, but I've been wondering if the electric MINI Cooper is too frisky for teenagers to learn in. If I was teaching a teenager, there are some modes that I wouldn't like enabled ...

I would suggest learning in an underpowered chassis is always good to learn in. Yes the SE accelerates briskly, however the chassis is up to the task. Now once the teenager got their license .........

I would most certainly let a teenager LEARN to drive in an SE. They would then have to prove to me that they LEARNED enough to drive one every day.

My father had underpowered 4-cylinder Sunbeam, Fiat and Triumph sports cars when I was learning to drive. In 1966, I dragged him to the local Ford dealer who had a brand new 427 Shelby Cobra on the showroom floor. It was more than twice as expensive as his foreign sports cars, a whopping $8,000! He didn't buy it and partly thanks to his decision, I'm still alive.

My daughter got her license in our 2 month old SE last February and loves driving it over the ponderous SUV. As a new driver I think the emergency braking the SE has been, umm, helpful on a couple of occasions for her. Wife and daughter always use mid mode. If I am able to drive it, I stick it into sport mode.

Being small and nimble makes for a good car to start in. Switching to a gasser after getting used to the quick acceleration might be an issue.

Neither my wife or daughter like driving my son's Mazda 6 with the very sloped front and rear end.

Our kid learned on a manual 15 year old 3 series coupe I paid $5,000 for. A friend with a son two months older than ours spent over $20,000 on a used Escape. All she kept saying to my wife was "she's gonna drive a BMW, blah blah...." She autocrossed it a few times then autocrossed in my Porsche. She got two wheels off the ground at the autocross. She tracked tracked my Porsche during a lunchtime ride, and spent the day tracking my 128i at a HPDE. She learned to respect the machine. Is the SE too fast? No. It isn't abut speed, it is about respect.

The SE has the same power as the S. What is the big deal?
