Correct, that's how the factory US lights work. If you want to separate the horizontal and vertical sections you have to buy the factory UK lights, or one of the smoked versions online. Then there is some coding to get the horizontal to properly illuminate for a turn signal. A work in progress on the thread that @SameGuy linked to...

Looks like New Jersey member aottley there seems to have figured it out. No hardware modding needed other than a pair of OE or aftermarket (Chinese) Euro taillights. The vertical and horizontal bars in the North American lights are internally bonded and no coding will separate them; OTOH the Euro lights are separate and addressable on the bus with a coding modification. Thid coding in Expert mode is more intricate than we were looking for, but if you’ve used Expert before it doesn’t look too daunting.

If anybody here has taillights with separate horizontal turn signals and decides to try it out, let us know.

I'm saving up for the OE units, but right now it’s the shipping that kills. It’d be cheaper for me to use some flight benefits and pick them up in person in Germany!
