How would I get it for free as it's trying to charge me?
Sorry about my naive question but map updates aren't free? I'm seeing this on the mapnsoft website -> CAD$35.12 for media (SD/USB) + Shipping
I have the premium plan extended warranty, is it included on that? I just got my Kona last friday![]()
Any idea if they can do this via OTA given the MnSoft update site is so slow? Garmin hand held,I can get the whole gigantic file without an issue. So, new update (V14) coming with changes:
- connected (in the cloud) routing (!!!)
- display navigation info on top when in different screens
- when stopped for longer than 15 second, route overview is displayed
- Brand icons for EV chargers with AC/DC charging displayed
- map themes (milk, latte, mocha) (just hope it doesn't spill)
- update popup if maps is 2 years outdated (*nag*-screen???)
- media player update
- sounds of nature
I am looking forward to most of those changes. The nag screen I am not sure about, since I believe the updates will be expensive once the free ones run out.
Forgive my ignorance, but I have a few questions:
1. Are map and general car software updates strictly "self-service", or do dealerships do this for you?
2. I don't recall being given any information when I bought the car about how/when to update the map and/or software. Where did you folks get this information from?
3. Is the map update and the general software update the same process, or are these two different processes?
I'm not adverse to doing the update myself. But, being in the software business, I know the upgrade process can be buggy sometimes. Last thing I want to do is screw up the software in the car. For folks that have done it themselves, what was your experience? Where can I find instructions that I can review before attempting it myself?
Thanks for the detailed response. I think I'll wait for the download option and save myself $25. I assume it comes with instructions? What SD card did you use? Type (SD or SD Micro)? Brand? Size?General updates still need to be done by the dealer. I don't know the process the dealer uses - this could be over the OBDII port, but that's just a guess.
Map updates (which sometimes come with infotainment software updates) are a separate process that you can do yourself (or you can ask your dealer to do for you, I guess). Last October, I was able to download the update from this site:
https://www.mapnsoft.com/hyundai/customer/account/login/
Anyways, back in October I downloaded from the above site and I put the files on a new SD card, which I then inserted in the slot just beneath the screen on the Kona. It took a few minutes for it to process the infotainment updates, and then I had the new maps. I expect this update to be the same, but until I actually do the job, I won't know for sure.
The download process requires you to enter your VIN number. I *suspect* that something in there is encoded so that an SD card for one car can't be used in a different one. But that's just a guess as well.
They give you the option of purchasing a new SD card for 25$ instead of doing the download. Your choice, really. The download option won't be available until May 15th however (and that date is apparently still somewhat tentative).
If you literally just bought your Kona, you might need to wait for your VIN to be registered in their system. For whatever reason, that can take something like 6 weeks or so.
Note that the site above has a link in the upper right that says "report map errors". I have used this a couple of times to report missing or new EV charging stations in my area. Does it actually work? Who knows, but it gives me a feeling like I have done something productive.
The 2020 Kona appear to no longer have an SD card that is externally visible - people speculate that the update is now via USB instead, but until someone has had a chance to perform the update we won't know for sure.

It tells the system your model, year, trim level, and options if any, to make sure you get the right software and instructions for your car.The download process requires you to enter your VIN number. I should have said this is for the 2020 EV. Click "update instructions" to see them. The update for the Kona EV will be on a thumb USB drive, according to the update instructions posted on the Mapnsoft website.
Hope it worksI had ordered the SD card - according to the USPS tracking, it shipped today. Delivery tentatively Monday.
And here it is.Hope it works![]()
