Looks like Mini Cooper lives

Some people don't like the 2020/21 MINI Cooper (which I love) and some don't like the current MINI Cooper. Somewhere, there may be people who like this new rendition better. Here are the photos from the tweet:

The instrument panel has, er, changed. Did all the details move back to the center display as in days of old? How much info appears on the Head-Up display?

Touché.

I think the 16 cooper was the best looking, but alas, no electric version…
22 is not perfect in aesthetics but good enough :)

Is the bonnet scoop history? The taillights can't be part of the hatch, so that requires a bizarre hour-glass shape for the third door. Does that large, single piece of glass on the roof open? No speakers on the A-pillar--is this the "Signature/Level-1" model? The antenna appears to have dwindled away. Those who hate chrome are celebrating.

It doesn't look terrible, but I'm not a fan of those tail lights or the circular touchscreen. And the interior looks cheap, but maybe this is the Chinese market version.

Totally agree on interior. It looks pure ORA. On the other hand. Maybe it’s what’s going to help with the price. But no way OXFORD is going to build that.

Is this even going to be sold in your country?

In Soviet Russia, car drives YOU.

I was mostly joking about the cancellation, I'm only a few weeks out from getting my new one. I do like the update more than what most of you are saying. I like the simplicity of the interior. I think the interior materials are still pre-production, so I wouldn't worry about quality there. I also like the silhouette and shape of the exterior. I'm glad they got rid of the Brexit taillights. That's my least favorite part of the the current gen.

You make a good point as cars manufactured in China haven't made it to the US, yet.

I see what looks like a speaker grille on the A-pillar. Seems to be moved towards the top.

  • It looks like the dash is fabric or is that just a cover?
  • Did you notice the door handles being body colored and flush?
  • I like the smaller gauge cluster.
  • Love the smaller antenna.
  • The headlights are great.
  • How many parking sensors does a Mini need? Apparently the answer is 8 or maybe 9. Is that center one in the front for adaptive cruise or a parking sensor?
  • I'm not 100% sure but it looks like there is a gear selector behind the turn signal stalk similar to other electric cars. That would be nice to free up space in the center console.
  • It has the wide, euro style front license plate but it has solid red tail lights. I thought Europe required amber turn signals? There is a guy with a jacket on that looks like Chinese letters on it so maybe this picture is taken in China which makes sense for the red tail lights.
  • It doesn't have the turn signal on the side fender. I guess it has the turn signal in the door mirror now.
  • I don't get the moon roof. It is huge and too large to open very far inside the car. Will it open like 4" or will it pop up and slide back like an Acura Integra used to?

A few more random comments:

1. Can anybody glean any additional details from looking at the two three still-camouflaged vehicles parked next to near this white one?

ETA: I see (faux?) hood scoops and chrome light rings on the other cars, as well as what appear to be (faux?) sidemarker lights. Different models/vehicles designed for different markets? Or is the all-black motif just a Shadow Edition (i.e., an SE SE :))? However, that wouldn't explain the lack of sidemarkers on the white car, so hmmm.

2. Why does the center of the steering wheel seem to be covered by the same camouflage pattern...just a reflection?

3. GvilleGuy's joke about the spiderweb pattern in the taillights aside (which was quite funny), I like the rear, at least/especially the big 'Cooper S' lettering. It reminds me of a Porsche, and looks very upscale.

Most cars locate the speakers as far from the occupants' ears as possible, which is the reason they are low on the current car's A-pillars. I think placing speakers high on the A-pillar would complicate the design of the airbags.

Personally, I find it an interesting, or at least imaginative, solution to the question of, how to keep the quirkiness of the original Mini alive in the new era of EVs with touchscreens/tablets in/on the dash?
This looks like Tesla's tasteless industrial design infecting everyone else's EV (a free-floating display that looks like it was glued to the dashboard). While I like MINI sticking with the circular motif, making the center display a giant naked circle is the worst option, as a circle is an inefficient way to display information. It's likely more like the current binnacle, with a rectangular display embedded inside a bezel to give a circular look, meaning a lot of unnecessary space taken up. I hope it's not a final design.

At least there are physical switches still.

That's a good point. I don't know what that is, then.

I look forward to seeing a production model to make a better informed opinion. But these photos are definitely interesting.
