I have successfully used my mid-range Moto G5 phone with AA and two different Hondas (a 2018 Clarity and a 2016 Accord). Some Android phone brands simply don't work well with AA (probably due to various phone manufacturer's own software changes to base Android), and it's possible your phone itself is the culprit. Over time, however, I have indeed had problems when I tried other cables than the one originally supplied with the phone, so that could also be your problem. Finally, even in the Clarity, if your Android phone has a screen lock set up (code to unlock phone needed before accessing other apps), you may need to unlock your phone before AA will load even if plugged into the Clarity. So make sure your phone is unlocked (i.e., decrypted) when plugged in to the car.
