Is it (really) better to heat the car while plugged in?

This morning I got into my car, then did a remote start using Bluelink. My battery was charged to 80% Using my EVOBD2 Mini Bluetooth Display, I saw the power cycle from drawing from battery to drawing from the J1772. The cycle was battery 1 sec, J1772 2 sec. The blue link settings are climate 24C , front defrost on, heated steering wheel and back defroster on. The battery heater did not come on at all. My garage temp is about 2C.

See the peek at 8:20 am which is about 1Kw

I'm sorry that I wasn't clear. I am trying to use the Bluelink app to start the climate control command to warm up the car before leaving in the morning. If the car is unplugged from the charger, it works fine, but if the charger is still connected, I get an error message that climate control could not be started.
Here's the list of requirement from the app:

That's super interesting. Is all that data available via, e.g. Torque Pro? I can't turn on accessories with the "start climate" presets right now - that box will not stay ticked in the app. I think it works if I use the "Climate Start Without Presents" button.

Sorry I use EVOBD2, and not familiar with Torque Pro. I use the USB port in the top console, the bottom USB is off when car is off.
Have you setup Favorites under "climate settings" Just click on ADD FAVORITE then set the Climate, them slide both switches on and save.

Assuming you're talking about the app and not something on the car, "yes." At least I think so; my screens aren't quite labeled as you say—maybe an Android vs iphone difference or something. I have no "Climate Settings" nor "Favorites." If I hit the main-screen "Climate Start" button I get a list of presets—that's the only way to get to that list that I've found.

I can click "edit settings" for each of the 4 presets (no way to make additional ones):

I can tick that bottom box all day, hit apply, and it never changes the icon on the first screen nor remains checked if I return to the settings. Just a programming bug, I'm sure.
