Hello all! My name is Ryan, and I discovered this forum as I was researching how to be certified as an EV Charging Station Diagnostic Technician. I would like to network with other people who are currently working as field service technicians in the repair, upgrade, servicing, and diagnostics of EV Charging Stations. I do not own an electric vehicle, but I would someday own one. I really like the Lucid Gravity, but I would like to explore other EV vehicle options. Anyway, a few things to know about me: I enjoy camping, hiking, astronomy, information technology, and traveling. Interesting field, being a service tech for EV chargers. Would you also need to go through the journeyman electrician workflow?

Yes, indeed, it would be an interesting field. According to my research, there are two fields you can get into. One is becoming an EV charging station installer, which requires a journeyman electrician license. Installers work with high-voltage wiring when installing the charging stations. I don't know if EV charging companies would hire apprentice electricians.

Another option is becoming a commissioning technician. They install the networking equipment and other components that act as the brains of the charging station and keep it operating properly. They also repair, update, and maintain the charging stations. This is the field that I want to get into. However, I think some EV charging station companies would rather hire an installer who can do both installation and commissioning. That is why I wanted to network with other field service technicians and get as much information as I can about this field.

I like the commissioning side of things. I do not want to be an installer because it would take about four years to get my journeyman electrician license before I could apply for an installer position.
