Releasing the car to the insurance company is pretty standard in my experience.

When we were in this situation, I negotiated the payout with my insurance company, not the other driver's company (the other driver's was at fault). I never talked to the other insurance company at all.
I chose not to have my company involved.

Anyone have any experience with Root insurance? . Adjusters no longer look at the car. Now they want four, yes four pictures for their appraiser to determine the damage. Then, the adjuster told me, the body shop can file a supplement. My other cars are not insured for everyday use, so I have a feeing I am going to be in their rental for a "looong" time. ...

Just to note that this is the way State Farm does their claims now days.

Was there much damage behind the scenes? ie internal. It seems surprising that this is a total loss and sobering that what appears modest ends up like this. I've read 25% of cars in crashes are now total losses. So junkyards are being inundated with cars too pricey to fix because of what; too much tech involved? extremely expensive parts? high labor? - probably all of the above.

My insurance renewal is due next month and just got the bill, which is actually slightly less than last year, but one young driver is off the policy. I was gritting for a 25% increase (and it helps that "Barry the white Cooper" gets a new owner this weekend, but I am a bit sad).

cheers
