Grinding brakes...

Regarding the charge port freezing: I have never had this happen while driving but a couple times now it has been frozen OPEN. Water seems to migrate along the "arm" deep inside the bumper where it freezes, creating a blockage that prevents the door from closing. Once it wouldn't even lock and the warning chime went off every five minutes on an hour long drive. Maddening.

The charging door design and build is rather flimsy on the Kona compared to our previous Kia Soul. That wasn't exactly great either as we had some freezing issues, but overal it was better. It beats me why manufacturers put the charge port in the front of the vehicle which bears the brunt of ice and snow, especially in Nordic countries. Also having it in the front of the vehicle makes it extremely vulnerable in a collision.
 
My brakes only squeak when reversing out of my garage, not at any other time. Its just annoying when I'm braking in a forward motion as if I have a sheet of course sand paper between the brake pads and the discs. Its inaudible, but I can feel the feedback through my brake pedal. If it was rust build up that would have cleared after a while, but this goes on all day long.
My gut feeling tells me this is a brake pad issue.
 
Best to avoid using the "back" button on the browser, Bob. Try to always go forward by clicking the "Hyundai Kona Electric" link at the top to refresh the threads.

I really don't think there's anything wrong with your brakes or pads. EVs are quiet and you hear things that were always there anyway. I'm in perfect weather right now, 20°C, mostly sunny but occasional drizzle but I still get the noise. It's just the effect of minor rust deposits.

Could some small pebbles, dirt or coarse dirt be caught/embedded in your pad(s)? Look for uneven wear line circles on your rotors.

Not too sure about that one without taking off the wheels and look at the discs/rotors. Like I said in my earlier posts, I've been driving EV's for about 5 years now without any brake issues.This all started last summer when the car had only 2000km on the clock and in fine weather. The service centre road tested the car without taking off the wheels and said it was normal. I'm getting a familiar "that's normal" just like I used to get at the Tesla dealership with my Model S. Everytime I took the car in with a fault I got the same reply "that's normal".....
 
I don't think it is normal. My car makes no such noise. I have had grinding noises at times in past cars, and it was associated with unwanted material caught in the pads. So if it doesn't go away, might want to check that. Just taking the wheel off, and examining the rotor for uneven wear lines should tell you.

Unless people don't know BOB tell them what percentage of cars are electric in Norway. It's a big number
 
....going off the subject here guys, but what do you think about the "carpets" in the Kona? I call it cheap felt rather than carpet! It's difficult to clean at any time let alone in winter, and being black makes it even worse!
 
Using the brake pedal in Drive invokes regen, and results in little or no
hydraulic use. Using the brake pedal in Neutral uses nothing *but* hydraulics,
which is a useful tool in the right circumstances.

That's independent of "regen level" setting.

I threw the original mats in the trunk and installed all weather 3D Maxpider mats in the Kona even before I left the dealership. Every week I just pull the mats out and hose them off at the car wash, carpets are always perfectly clean :) It just gets too dirty in Canadain winters otherwise. As far as the quality of the carpet material, yes its cheap but its pretty much the same that I have seen from out recent Hondas.
 
I was talking about the carpets as a whole which are cheap, not the removable ones. I use rubber mats with a deep well and high sides to stop the water from melted snow and ice running onto the fixed carpet/felt. They work a treat!

Yes my intention was to also comment on the general carpet quality, which seems relatively similar to industry standard cheap in the CUV market and also comment how to mitigate clean up on the cheap carpet with good quality all weather mats.
