MINI Countryman EVs can now be ordered, and some are inbound to dealers in the US.

One of the options listed on one of these cars is ... the Gas Guzzler Tax.

But this tax doesn't apply to SUVs (there were none in 1978), and this car is an EV.

I realize that all penalties assigned to a manufacturer get passed on to the customers. I'm just curious why this tax applies to an EV given that it doesn't guzzle *any* gas.

Here's the option list for one that will no doubt expire ten minutes after it arrives at the dealer:

You'll have to drill down in the "see all options" hyperlink to see the Gas Guzzler Tax option.

Don't know why there would be a gas guzzle tax on an electric car, since it seems it applies to cars that get less than 22.5 mpg.

Call the dealer, but I suspect it's just an error in the marketing literature.
