Empty box under trunk floor?

I rotated my tires today, at 8K miles. Inside of front tires notably worn!

While I had the wheels off, I noticed that there is a black plastic box, open to the outside and with drain slots, under the trunk. Maybe 18" deep, 10" tall, and the full width the suspension allows. There may be a part or two inside, but it is essentially empty. Seems like a crazy waste of space that would have allowed more storage under the trunk floor. Anyone know why it's there?

Are you talking about the space between the pre existing F56 sheet metal stamping and the underbody aero tray? The noisemaker for when you're going <25mph is in there if it makes you feel better.

Thanks. Sounds like the item in question.

I wonder why the F56 stamping wasted space that’s obviously in short supply. The gas tank would’ve been under the rear seat, I hope. So why not put a deeper, aero-friendly compartment under the trunk?
