Elon Musk on the Joe Rogan show

Finally made it through the entire podcast. Personally, I found it a bit underwhelming, though that may be because I have a friend who is a Joe Rogan fan who's been trying to get me to listen to him for a while now. There were some decently good parts, though.

The conversation around AI was interesting, as well as (for me, at least) the VTOL electric airplane bit. Basically, though, I felt Rogan didn't have the technical background to ask the interesting engineering type questions or well enough acquainted with Tesla to ask the sort of questions that might have shed more light on their current and/or future operations.

Probably the only new thing we got a hint of is that Musk may have some sort of air conditioning solution in mind that he wants to develop.

It's still pretty nuts that the media really only talked about the marijuana part. This was just a brief bit near the end, where he took one puff of the thing like it was a cigar. A quick in-the-mouth and an exhale. No inhalation into the lungs. He would have no problem passing a drug test today if he were made to take one. The fact that this seemed to really negatively affect the stock price speaks volumes about our society and the degree to which we cling to a hypocritical puritan ideal than it does about Musk. In my opinion, of course.

You have the absolute right to disagree with my comments, but I am not sure I understand your response. I still do not think that comparison with Model T made sense. I also stand by my statement that the note from Elon had no information that would provide specifics on the financial state. And, I think it is a correct that any such financial information be provided in the right forum, managed by the investor relations department. So I do not fault Elon for not mentioning anything right now. He did not and should not. I also understand and appreciate that Elon has created the EV automobile market. ( I would say the first use of electric vehicles was on the train system. Mines for example have battery operated locomotives). Without Elon, that would not have happened.

He is comedian and this was supposed to be something lighter. I am not sure the idea was to have a discussion on specifics.

I agree. The issue however is that, this is a based on accumulation of events: his tweet on going private but not able to execute, his attacks on the cave diver, the perceived lack of transparency so far, and then this. If the other events had not happened, I do not believe that the reaction would have been this strong.
 
Maybe if someone told him he was acting like Donald Trump he would listen and change [emoji39]

It absolutely astounds me that the only thing being discussed from what is reported to be a wide-ranging, 2-1/2 hour discussion of Elon's various activities, including running Tesla... the only thing being talked about is a few seconds where the host offered Elon a doobie, and Elon politely took a single toke -- after reminding the audience that it's now legal in California.

I'm hoping to see some reporting summarizing the high points of the discussion... the important stuff, not the one thing those who are almost insane with jealousy of Elon have latched onto, and are using as fuel for yet another in a long, long series of smear campaigns.

This is getting very, very tiresome. Tesla bashers and those suffering from Elon Jealousy Syndrome shouldn't be allowed to control the conversation here.

Yeah, I would hope that any (almost certainly temporary) drop in stock price would have more to do with something of substance; specifically, several top Tesla execs leaving within a short period of time. I do find that troubling.

Thanks, Domenick for suggesting we expand the conversation beyond just the podcast interview. I fear that means all that would be discussed is the 3 seconds where Elon took a single puff off a doobie. If the only debate here is over whether he inhaled... well, even as a retiree I have better things to do with my time.

We pay 5x too much which has been a hidden and intentional subsidy to petrol because of the power phasing- Tesla could simply sell commercial AC systems which do it right that are mated to power generation by its in home solar panels and batteries. That is totally essential. Its going to happen because its compulsory to the vision and gets rid of a huge outrageous obscene amount of waste and cost to ordinary and criminal subsidy of petrol. More cooling will be needed with increasing climate heat- it allows one to scale down the cost and size of the batteries and solar system speeding uptake so its totally compulsory and you saw Musk's eyes light up- and any BS that tries to stop it would get crucified because its cover up level stuff.

Also Rogan was asking the right questions about roads and stuff like that. You don't need the old mag lev stuff there appear to be at least 3 approaches and 3 physics effects including holy grail gravitics which would turn the world upside down. Seen levitating fruit flies and walnuts and things like that in in university labs recently, same kind of stuff provides partial cloaking with bending light with a field. Also seen the Hendo Hoverboard, and also claims from a researcher working at Locheed Martin about the Hutchison effect trying to file a patent I think. There is acoustic levitation
There is what Nassim Harriman is talking about- seems unified gravity is here.

Of course any kind of safe economical levitation or gravity mirror type stuff would radically alter the world beyond just not having to build and keep up the roads but that is a feature, also no more pollution from tires or having to do breaks, it substantially simplification of vehicle design again it seems. I also don't think the small air vehicle approach can be dismissed just on noise and blowing debris. Maybe there could be some sort of active cancellation? Look at the Lilium it is a radical simplification it seems and may not blow a tremendous about of debris and seems quiet. But these things right now do focus on where Tesla needs the focus.

Ah, well that's a disappointment. :(

Several people commenting on an IEVs news article on the podcast said they were listening to it and found it very informative. I was hoping for a sort of "executive summary"; I don't generally watch long videos. Since I can read about 7x as fast as most people talk, I usually find it to be a waste of my time.

Two guys at Rogan’s bar. Reminds me of drinking beer at the Velvet Hammer on BC street Okinawa ... when in the Marines.

Musk was asked when he knew he was different and said age 5. I realized it in 6th grade and by middle school wondered if I had sinned and been sent to a penal planet.

Given the time spent, Fremont must be running on autopilot. Hopefully the shorts missed it.

The AI part actually was pretty good. Had me thinking about it in ways I hadn't previously.
 
Well it's about time he took a toke and relaxed a minute. It looks to me like the 25 hour days have worn him down and he needs a rest...either that or it wasn't his first toke of the day. It's okay for CEOs and Congressmen to hit happy hour everyday at 4:00 but one takes a toke from a much safer and less addictive herb and folks think the corporate world is in crisis. My only disappointment with it will come if any of his factory workers test dirty on a ua. and get in trouble for the same thing as their CEO did in front of the whole world. At least now it's easy to see where he got the idea to put his roadster with a dummy driver, on the tip of his heavy lift rocket's maiden voyage and take a shot at Mars! Stereo blasting away! Genius!
 
I don't want to change the subject though. Elon Musk is on a whole different intellectual plane. His brain never slows down and while we will reap the technological benefits, it may well drive him mad if he can't find some sort of relief valve. I doubt alcohol or weed is his answer. I've been skeptical of his chances of Tesla being financialy successful, but it looks like it may turn the corner later this year and I will cheer him when it does. I've also been glad to see that his larger plan has already yielded many other manufacturers of competing electric vehicles. GM looks to be going all in by 2020 and due largely to Elon, this is happening.
