Clarity - egress warning chirp

So for the past week or so, every time I finish a drive and put it into Park and then shut off the car and exit the car and close the door I get an excited warning chirp -beepbeepbeepbeepbeep. Like a 'hey dummy, you left the car running", or "you left the lights on", but neither of those is true, nor is anything else unusual. Then I open the door and close it and it gives the normal "beep" as if to say 'all good', and then when I walk away I get the second chirp a few seconds later with the sound of the doors locking.

I'm not sure what is triggering the warning. I have the headlights on 'Auto' but it has never resulted in any issue previously. Whatever the problem is, opening and closing the door seems to reset it. Is this something I should have the dealer look at?

Check to be sure your cell phone is not in the same pocket as your keys. The phone can shield the keys signal and the car thinks the keys never left the car. Or something.

Sounds like you have your doors on auto-lock. Check your vehicle settings under doors. Do you always use the same key fob?

My Clarity has started to exhibit this problem very frequently recently. I've had the car since January, using auto-lock from the beginning, and it had been an occasional thing, but now it's almost every time. It's a minor problem, but really annoying having to listen every time to make sure the car will really lock as I walk away. I understand that the car is falsely detecting that the keys are still in the car when I close the door.

I've been experimenting a bit trying to get the keys farther away from the interior as the door closes - so far I seem to be having some success if I remember to hold the fob in my pocket, with the bulk of my hand blocking the path from the Fob back toward the car, as I close the door.

Only a single fob is used, and it is in my pocket and not near my phone. And similar to vicw, I've had the car for months and it may have happened once or twice over that time, and now it is basically every time. No settings or behaviors have changed, though the weather is getting colder obviously.

I will see about trying to be aware of how far away the fob is from the car when I shut the door.

Isn’t there a setting for how long the car waits before attempting the auto lock?

If you lengthen the time, it might prevent all the false beeping.

I don't think so.

I was looking for this delay too because the car tries to lock before I can get something out of the boot and close it,
which then makes it unhappy (because the boot is open).

Correct me if there is indeed an auto lock delay setting.

Yeah its a freaking ninja some times. I usually have the kids in the car so will open one of their doors, but as soon as all 4 doors are closed you have like 3 seconds to open something before it tries to lock, and if you miss that time period while opening the trunk or something it will yell at you

I've been having the same thing. It occurred occasionally before but now it is almost every time. I suspect it might be cold-weather-related somehow.

FYI, if it does the rapid beeping thing, it does not autolock the doors so you have to remember to press the Lock button on the keyfob if this happens.

Check key fob battery replace with fresh one if necessary... Low battery on fob will cause all kind of weird issues related to proximity sensor in the car.

I have this on my 2018 Clarity Touring plug-in. Drove me crazy, still does. For me it happens when I close the door and the headlights are set to "Auto". If I turn my headlights to the "Off" position, then no warning beep when I exit. Weird!!! I assume the programming is such that any headlight setting other that "Off" generates the warning. Frustrating since you train yourself to ignore the warning or train yourself to turn the headlights on an off and not make use of the Auto feature.

Maybe they can remedy in a software update. Let me know if this occurs with other Clarity owners.

OK more data... I had to retrieve something from the backseat while it was parked in the garage so I unlocked it from the kitchen with the key fob (and left the fob there) and got my item from the rear drivers side door and when I closed it, it rang off again. The fobs were both >15 feet away.

I suspected the 'Auto' headlights was to blame as well, so I just tried it but switching the headlights to 'OFF' while it was still in the garage (key fob not close to the car). No luck... The lights did not come on when I opened the door, but it still screamed at me 2 seconds after I closed the door. Any door. It's maddening.

I usually have this happen if I walk behind the car near the trunk. I always thought it was because the trunk sensor senses the fob and thinks it's still in the car. Not sure though.

Per the manual, page 140, the fob needs to be within 5 feet of the car (front driver side door handle) after the last door is closed and then you will hear 1 beep. Then you need to move further than 5 feet away to hear the 2nd beep and have it lock.

Once you hear the first beep, you can still open any of the doors. If you close that door, you will hear the first been again. At any point after the first beep if you do not move more than 5 feet away, you will hear the multiple beeps and the doors will not lock.

So you cannot make this happen if you do not bring the fob with you or if you stand within 5 feet of the door handle for too long.

Not sure this really helps anything, but I noticed today, for the first time, that the fob has tiny LED, which blinks red if all is working well with the closure process, and it shuts off when the car actually locks. If it fails, the light doesn't on at all.

It could be useful, for me, at least, when parking in a really noisy setting, to be confident that the locking is working, even if I can't hear the chirp.

Yes, this is what happens 100% of the time I get the eight beeps. If I exit the car and close the door, I get the first beep (normal). if I go to the trunk though and open the trunk before the doors lock (and get second tone) I get the eight (or whatever) tone alarm most of the time.

I concur with you that what it seems like to me is that the sensor in the trunk lid thinks the key is in the car.

It is very annoying. I wind up using the key fob a lot to have to lock the car because one you get the rapid beep, the only options are to use the fob or press the button on the door.

And with respect to my last, because this happens almost every time I exit the car and go to the trunk, if I am going to go to the trunk, I just use the botton on the door to lock the car as soon as I exit.

Walk away seems only to work for me when I get out of the car and really walk away. If I go to the trunk, it does not work.
