Clarity died at light

This is concerning my father’s Clarity. I actually purchased one myself too but even though signing all paper work the dealer reneged saying they gave me an interest rate not available in my market. Sigh.

Anyway my father has been having the same issue with stated range being wildly inflated. But the reason for this post is for something of even greater concern in my opinion. He told me when he started up the car a few days ago and went to back up the rear camera wouldn’t work. Just a black screen. Then after he got underway the camera for the side stopped working as well. He said when he came to a stop at a light the car suddenly shut down. He was able to restart the car and from there he said everything seemed to be working again. Sounds like a software bug to me but I’m curious if anyone here has experienced this and simply want to document this for the edification of others. It is very concerning for me having my father in a car that just randomly shuts down as this is clearly a grave safety issue.
 
Sounds like he should take it to a dealer along with posting here. Also sounds like you’re a resident of a non-ZEV state.
 
Ask your father to recount what happened before the car shut down and how he noticed the car shut down. When he bring it to the dealer it will help the techs to troubleshoot the issue and help them to forward the info to Honda support.

Those 2 cameras are separate from the drive system so they shouldn't have anything to do with it. Ask and see if your father if he was trying things out before the car shut down.... My experience in supporting manufacturing equipment tells me the guys that report the issues don't always report everything.... Either they don't tell the whole story or they add more to it :P
 
That sort of thing happened to me while I was driving on the freeway. The screen went black but the car was still operable. I experienced this before in my Ford Fusion and Prius. It was due to a software update. I guess they don't know if the car is in operation or not when they decide to update. The update took about 4-5 minutes and after that everything returned to normal. That happened about 3 months ago and haven't had a problem since.

It sounds like he probably won’t take it in which drives me nuts. I also told him next time to video it. He should have gotten proof. Sigh. I’ll ask again the sequence of events though as it may prove useful for others.

Nailed it. Texas. The car I bought was a Red Touring with tan leather. In the end after they reneged on the closed deal we tried to work out a new deal and it came down to a difference of about $200. They refused to budge and so did we. That was over a month ago and the car is still sitting on the lot. Had been sitting there unmoved for a long time. Bird poop had etched into the clear coat to boot. Not sure what route we are going car wise now. Wait and save for a Model 3, end of year Clarity, new Leaf 60kwh...just don’t know. I do know it has to be significantly electric;)
 
Talked to my dad again. Here is the sequence of events. He started the car with no apparent problems. Went to back out of the driveway and although the backup camera came on at first it went black on the screen shortly thereafter. A few minutes later he went to change lanes and noticed the side camera dead too. Right after that he came to a stop at a light and he said the whole car shut off. Nothing showing on any screens and AC kicked off. Dead. He pushed the start button and everything came back to life as if nothing ever happened. He said it hasn’t done any of that since. I specifically asked if had been touching any buttons whatsoever before the car turned off and he said no. ‘Tis a mystery. I hope it will never come back but I’m really thinking we will be revisiting this at some point. If it does or if he takes it to the dealer to have them look at it I will update this thread. Thanks guys.
 
You might want to install a dash cam with cabin view on your dad's car.... Just in case it happens again you will have a video record of it

You could ask for some accessories at dealer cost. Maybe some free maintenance too. It's best to go on a low peak day like Tuesday . I went on a Sunday night and arrived at the dealership just before closing. They wanted to sell a car before going home. Keep going back and they will cave. If they stone wall you take your offer to a different dealer.
