Cali CAV decal idea

I know I've seen posts regarding the clean-air-vehicle decal that a shocking number of Teslas have accepted as part of their branding. The 2022 version is canary yellow, and led me to hold off sticking it on for the last month. I discovered twraps, a company that makes an easily removable decal UNDER the sticker, as well as a tinted OVER-wrap that tames the sticker's appearance. I went ahead and applied one to the front and one to the rear, it actually looks decent and not as obnoxious. The sticker isn't "scanned" by anything other than the cops, so I don't think having it less yellow will really make a difference.

I was approved for the $2k CVRP about a month ago, they say it can take 90 days, so still in that window.

While I'm envious you live in a state where EVs can use HOV lanes, that sticker is such an eyesore (shape as well as color) that maybe I'm glad I don't...

I attached mine on a magnet sheet and add them to the rear fender when I know I need to drive in the HOV and remove when I park.

Agreed, that's why I wanted an easy out in case I just couldn't stand it!! The magnet option is also good, though a little more work and too easy to be stolen, IMO.

Our ICE plates are navy blue on a pale silver (metallic white) background, while ZEV (BEV and PHEV) plates are dark green on a very pale light green metallic field. The “green” plate is the what allows access to designated HOV lanes. No sticker needed.

That is definitely more logical. Cali has made their CAV policy on a rolling basis, so they only last 3 years at a time. Can't really implement that without requiring plates every years which nobody will accept.

Sorry about that. @drdunkyn I also meant to write that had you not described your new way of applying the decal, I might not have even noticed! I think it looks just fine (within the constraints of the CA CAV system). Big thumbs up!

LOL -- we're ALL self-centered, as well as self-centred! We live in our own bubble, and until someone describes their own you won't know about it! I do wish we had a license plate option, but as Cali only uses the decals PLUS their Fastrak dongle, the LP won't change. I actually don't know what the sticker gets me, aside from a pass going through the HOV on-ramp during rush-hours. And frankly, that's worth it! Appreciate your perspective!

The HOV program in CA is set to end in 2025, so in 3 years these stickers might be gone, anyway.

I read somewhere that the average speed in the HOV lane is monitored. If it goes below a certain average, then the program is changed to exclude more cars, in order to keep the lane moving at a certain average speed. This can explain the 3 year period for each colored sticker. I remember when the first stickers allowed the hybrid Prius, Civic, and natural gas vehicles.

Exactly my point. I want to be able to easily remove them. The stickers themselves have the expiration date on them, thus they couldn't reasonably change that, but does enable them to change it at the expiration date.

This is specific to California, with the FasTrak pass. But sounds like you have it made in NY!

You right in West cost you have 90% EV here in NY is nothing driving I 3 for 6 years I see few now is more Teslas showing here a SECooper is really rare

For a moment I was envious. Then I realized I no longer have a 53 mile one way commute. I now have a 5 mile commute, and instead of a decal, the state is giving me $2,500 for buying the car. How is that for "self-centred"

It looks like the powers that be knew what they were doing when they set these programs up. If not for the two tax credits, I wouldn't have bought into the electric car experiment. Now I border on being an e car evangalist. Like any good snake oil salesman, I am happy to sell friends on the advantages of the platform whether or not the model they are interested in will get the tax benefits I got.

The CA stickers do get baked on to the car after 3 years, but I was able to remove the 3 on my Fiat 500e in about a half hour with some rubbing alcohol & a few cotton balls. Not that much fun, but not too bad

Agreed, in Cali we got $750 + $2k in addition to the $7500 tax credit, and so I should be ashamed that I don't want to pay the $.50 fee to ride the HOV lane to and from work. It's these little petty victories that keep me going. And also I'm a ridiculously cheap b@stard, and wouldn't enjoy the SE any less WITHOUT all those benefits. Honestly. Love this little bugger.
