Austin TX power?

Hi,

Anyone know if the Texas power outages impacted Austin TX? In particular, the area around the new Tesla factory.

Austin resident here. I can’t speak to where the Gigafactory is being built, but many residents had been impacted by both power outages and water issues. Luckily, where we are only had an ~8 hour outage on Monday. We still have water (low pressure though) and are on a boil notice.

We’re fortunate though. We know some families that were without power for about 4 days and still have zero water.
 
I have seen reports that some people who didn't lose power now wish that they had. They are receiving electric bills in excess of 10,000$.

We didn't lose power at my place but we get our power from a non profit co-op and they have confirmed no change in rates. I don't see the few high bills received by people standing. My guess is adjustments will be made.

The thing that is really odd to me is that there are apparently plans in Texas where you pay a small monthly plus the wholesale rate for the electricity you use. And given that the wholesale rate went from 50$/MWh to 9000$/MWh, power bills are just off the charts.

But in part the wholesale power rate went up so high because the natural gas price also went up.

For most states I have lived, the rates are set by the public utilities commission. There is a slight seasonal rate change, but other than this, we don't have these huge swings, even on the hottest days in the summer.
 
I have been here 7 years and this is the first I have heard of it happening. Hopefully the last as well.
