I remember when I was managing a project in Europe. Many of my team members who were spending time over there were excited to see that the rental car company we had a deal with allowed them to rent a big Mercedes or BMW for the same price as a Smart, a small Fiat, or VW. Initially many chose the big, luxury cars, however, after they arrived back to the hotel late a few nights and found they couldn't find a parking space big enough for the big cars, many traded them in for more compact models.
Different tools for different jobs.
I still don't like those little cars as electrics in this early day of EVs. This is because many tend to associate all electric cars with impractical little junkers and write off the concept altogether. Seeing them on the road, especially driving slowly, and worse, blocking the fast lane, often reinforces the golf cart stereotype. I still won't eat at Togos sandwich shops since I heard their commercial on the radio joking about how electric cars weren't real cars. I was on my way to Saturn to return my EV1 at the end of its lease so it could be crushed. It was small but it was a real car.
We need dumb people to adopt EVs as badly as we need smart ones to. The Model S nicely broke that mould.
