I have a cheapo OBD ii and used inCarDoc (free iOS app) to read codes in the past.
Any idea if it can get the battery capacity? Or only way is to get it from the dealer? I am at 30% oil life so a couple of more months until I visit the dealer.. (free oil changes for life).
It's in the software, but also requires that your reader hardware have a big enough buffer. Many of the cheap ones do not but there's a $20-$30 one in the thread that does have a big enough buffer. Now I remember this thread from some time ago. Wasn't sure if things had changed since. I imagine it's mostly in the software knowing what to look for.
