Annoyances Thread

I like my 2020 Niro EV in many respects, but there's a very annoying motor/reduction gear whine that happens on deceleration starting at about 45 MPH, peaking at 40 MPH and then tapering off to nothing at 35 MPH. If you extremely lightly press the throttle, the sound instantly disappears. The sound happens whether or not the vehicle is in neutral (IE no brake regeneration). It happens even if you are using brake regeneration to decelerate. It's very audible, even over music. I confirmed this sound another new 2020 Niro EV right off the dealership lot. My Niro has a 6/2020 build date and does have the 710 motor. I am not exhibiting any of the symptoms that others have reported about the clicking/grinding sound, but I wanted to know if others hear this whining sound?

I installed a spectrum analyzer app on my phone and am going to try to get an idea as to the frequency of the sound, but I am guessing it's at least 1khz or higher. I am not sure if more soundproofing under the hood and firewall will at least lower the whining sound level.

Sorry, thought it was in that thread also... people have commented on the whine in another thread, or perhaps I am remember it on one of the other 3 forums. Anyway this problem has been seen and is being disucssed.

Sorry, the search functions on forums suck, so you will want to find it yourself.

Not Niro but a good place to start:

My annoyances? My car's a lemon and I can hardly believe how bad Kia customer service and dealerships have been to work with. My recent 12V battery failure is just icing on the cake. Looking forward to my next EV.

Bummer...I have had a couple issues, AC primarily, that my local dealer fixed with no problem. I did have to use a Lemon Law once when a dealer repeatedly could not fix a car under warranty. If your state has a law you can use, look into it...and let them know that you are. I ended up with my car being bought back and went out and got a better one.

Oh I've already hit all the thresholds under WA lemon law. Kia is being very slow to respond and cagey. They issued a buyback letter that gave me 45 days to respond. The stink of it was that my car didn't get back in my hands fixed until the 47th day and they haven't issued a new offer letter yet. Insane how little they seem to care.

Not sure what agency deals with this in WA, but would find out and contact them. Good Luck...too bad.

Are they at least giving you a loaner?

Why does my recirculate keep automatically turning on and off? We have fires up here in the PNW right now and I want as much smoke as possible to stay outside the car. Stupid "smart" climate control. This is with "Auto" turned off.

that one drove me nuts too. I think I figured out how to defeat it and forgot what I did...which is too bad because I had a rental Hyundai during a recent trip with a very similar console and the same problem.

There is a way to set the recirculate button to stay on. The instructions are somewhere on this board and in the manual.

This is the one I got. I liked the red for the panic button.

I have them now, and they almost completely fix the problem. If I put the key in my change pocket in Levi 501s, then sometimes when I bend my hop it will still go off. Still a huge improvement.

And during 3AM trips to the toilet, nothing is protection against stepping on the key in the pocket of the pants I left on the floor.

My poor neighbors....

(In my defense, it was dark!)

Reading the description on Amazon, it says nothing about the Kia Niro EV. What car do you have?

The keys for the Niro EV are the same as many other Kia vehicles and are not specific to the EV. That's why the covers that I linked above fit -- I can assure you they do because I have them on my Niro EV's key fobs.

It fits the key snugly, and all the buttons work and I set off the alarm button by accident far less frequently. Mission accomplished.

Some annoyances I haven't seen mentioned so far in my 2019 EX Premium Launch Edition (US):
...
2. Lack of memory function for seats, mirrors, radio presets, etc.
...

I thought the Launch Edition was the only US version that DOES have memory seats. Is that incorrect? I was hoping to eventually retrofit a memory seat module and for buttons to my (non-Launch) EX Premium.

No US versions have memory seats. Not even launch edition which I have. They were only available in Canada. If you figure out how to add it let us know.
