Finally getting around to dealing with unreliable Android Auto on my 2021 Kona EV Ultimate. It repeatedly disconnects and gives a "Reading USB ..." message.

Is this a known problem or an occasional issue with some cars? It's not the cable. Two Galaxy S21s both have the problem.

Will an Android Auto Bluetooth adapter work? Any recommendations or cautions?

I don't have this model car so i cannot comment, but every time i've had an issue with the android auto in my cars, it's been my phone. especially if it's an older model/version of android.

Do you have a friend you can try a newer device in your car? like an s24?

I have an S21 Ultra and a bluetooth android auto dongle. Works perfectly. As does wired android auto. But if there's an issue with the USB circuit in your car my feeling is a BT dongle may not fix it.

I now suspect the USB connector on the phone. In any event, I got an AAWireless so no longer have to bother plugging in. So far it's been a solid connection.

Solved - I bought an AAWireless Two dongle. It connects automatically on Bluetooth when the car turns on, and brings up the map. If I use any of the infotainment buttons, it's necessary to select Android auto from the screen to get back to it. Other than that, it's almost perfect.
