A/C stopped working mid-trip after recharge

Was driving a ~4 hour trip - we're at the end of a heat wave in California. Stopped for lunch/recharge, and after we got back in, the A/C wouldn't cool the car for the rest of the trip (it was working fine until we stopped). Tried any number of things - turning A/C on and off again, changing temperatures, toggling the air quality sensor, stopping the car, getting out and back in (to "turn the car off"). No luck.

Made for a sweaty second half of the trip - luckily the heat made the kids lethargic, so they slept through it mostly. Nonetheless, a somewhat uncomfortable rest of the trip.

About a week ago, i noticed that it took 2~3 minutes for the A/C to start one time, but then it turned on just fine. Dunno if that's a clue or not.

Anyone heard of this before, or know of tricks to reset it properly?

Most likely the refrigerant has leaked out. Hopefully, the condenser didn't take a rock hit. Time to take into the dealer.

I doubt it’s a refrigerant leak. My XC40 P8 did the same thing about a month ago. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back, so to speak, and the dealer made me a zero-balance trade for another P8.

Yeah, it's now working just fine again. I read on a couple other forums that this might happen if the refrigerant pressure was too high? that maybe in the heat (we were in the heat in central california, and had just charged for ~45 minutes), so maybe that affected it?

If it's cutting out on high pressure, then the manufacture designed the system improperly. A too small or improperly designed condenser system would be high on my list.

If there is no electric fan. Installing an electric fan might be a fix for this issue.

It doesn't seem like a car to drive in a warm climate unless they fix it.

Oh yes, this just happen to me, car is 586 miles and doesn’t even have plate yet, outside is 95.

Since there have been many instances of this happening, don’t think it’s either a rock hit or refrigerant leak from any other cause. There’ve just been too many times…

I get the feeling that this is related to earlier "heat pump" recall. Taking car to dealer tomorrow. XC40 Recharge is nice car to drive, but definitely Volvo "Unreliable"

I feel bad, but me thinks that Consumer Reports is gonna savage this car's reliability. It's a bit of a shame, as I do like it.

See my post under Hot Weather. Same thing happened to mebut the fix worked and we've driven 1000 miles in temps from 118 [Portland] down the 5 and 99 to LA with no problem. It was corrupt software. Jim Fisher Volvo in Portland diagnosed and fixed it.

In my case, whole car rebooted in middle of the traffic awhile car is still moving on the way to dealer to fix this issue and suddenly AC start working again, I captured the video when this happened. I will try to post video online.
