Lol yeah. But I’ve already tried to work an order from “inside” (ie dealership-management-level connections) and have had no luck. There’ll be thousands delivered next year, and they’ll have been ordered… somewhere. So, yeah, I’ll remain naively optimistic I can get on the list.

I've been waiting to order an F-150 Lightning since the day after the announcement in May 2021. Ford did just tell me I might be able to place my order this winter, so I'm not sure I'd believe VW's (or anyone's) production predictions.

The current sales landscape is not sustainable. Some low production stuff will command premiums, but eventually we'll get back to stuff sitting on a lot people want to sell and will be willing to deal to do so.

I remember one of my parent's coworkers paid a premium to be one of the first to have a PT Cruiser. A friend walked when a dealer wanted $750 non refundable to get on a list for a New Beetle.

Most cars are just cars.

Oh I personally believe this is an artificially-created “tight market.” Assembly plants didn’t suddenly shutter, they didn’t suddenly cut production, there’s full employment in the sector, demand hasn’t suddenly skyrocketed well beyond projections.

There have been global supply issues with a great many items. I'm not in the car industry, but I am in industry. I've seen many normally in-stock items go to months or even a few years leadtime. It's been a pain in the butt to work around. And I have a lot more flexibility as I order spares for my machines. I can make sort-a-similar parts work to avoid months of downtime. That is not feasible in production, stuff needs to fit.

You are absolutely right. Am in the industry as well, and dealing with and designing around long lead time electronic parts is now the new "norm" unfortunately...
