Last Saturday I took the SE to the PCA monthly breakfast. I have a lot of friends I see once a month at breakfasts and club events. A friend with his new Cayman GTS was early too. I tossed him the key, he took it around the row of cars. I told him to take it on the street and give it a punch. He did.

When he pulled in another friend with a rare 996 Turbo S pulled in next to me. I asked him if he drove an electric car. He said he picked up a Tesla the day before. He took it for a spin. Not as fast as the Tesla, but a lot of fun, and 30 grand less.

After breakfast a buddy who has a 930, 996GT3, 928S, Lambo, and Ferrari took it for a long drive with me. He was very impressed. Then another friend, multi Porsche (some in restoration = pieces) took it for a longer drive, and couldn't stop saying how he cant believe how much fun it is.

On the way home I called an anti EV friend with an Alfa 4C for him and Alfa Stilvio for his wife. He was nearby so we met by my house and he took it for a drive. My anti EV friend is now curious about the forthcoming Alfa EV.

Then 3 other neighbors took it for a drive. My next door neighbor had so much fun, his wife told us later that day that he said he "needs" one. My wife (she autocrossed our 944S2 when pregnant) in the last 10 years had no desire, and didn't even bother to test drive the 951S, E36 M3 it replaced, Z-3M it replaced, or Cayman it replaced, and only drove the 1er once and is "perfectly content" with her XC90 response was the SE is a lot of fun, offered her a drive, and mentioned the 10 grand in tax credits.

This thing is contagious. I think my dealer may owe me a finders fee or three soon.

My main concern was the FWD drivetrain. I have only owned RWD sports cars.

Was pleasantly surprised in my SE test drive. It was balanced enough for non reckless street driving. The relatively low weight and short wheelbase helped a lot with driver engagement. Overall character was playful and not serious.

My previous car was a first gen Miata so I pretty much accepted anything would be a downgrade in handling and feedback but so far I have been pretty happy with the SE! FWD is better than I thought it would be but I'm not exactly thrilled about it... RWD was so much better.

I recently got some better tires and they're such a huge improvement in steering response! The stock 16" tires have the weakest sidewall I've ever seen. With the tires off the wheel I can compress them with just one finger. The UHP all seasons killed my efficiency but are totally worth it for the improved handling.

The SE is the only FWD car that didn't bug me. The traction control being so fast really saves it, imo.

It's still the most fun EV I have ever driven by a mile :)

I'm trying to convince a friend who's looking at his first EV to give my SE a test drive. I know he's not interested in a MINI because of the size, but I want him to experience some better handling so he doesn't think something like the VW ID.4 is representative of all EVs.

Throw them the keys. :)

I'm over 6 feet and find it to be pretty spacious. I convinced a taller friend to take it for a drive and they ended up buying one.

I visited a neighbor down the road this morning (my area is rural where houses are far apart and set way back off the road), and let him and his roommate each take my SE for a short test drive today. The both loved the car and were fascinated by it. Lots of discussion and photos happened. Most complicated issue was explaining the simple shifter.

So far everyone I’ve let drive our SE has loved it. I took some good friends out the other night, expecting usual banter but they didn’t have much to say except for smiles. Even my staunch Tesla fanboy friend loved it, he liked the solid feeling of the interior but still mentioned enough times it’s not a Tesla.
We did agree it’s an expensive car no rebate but there isn’t anything in the after rebate range that is as fun or puts a smile on your face.

But white Teslas are the coolest thing when you get 4 or more together! Really brings out the panel gap.

My wife is considering selling her Tesla bc of the stigma, especially now w Elon being so nutty w Twitter. The only hangup is what to get. She can't have an SE bc the frequency of the motor gives her migraines (can't even ride in mine).

The problem is getting a car. You might still be able to order an SE and get it within six months, try doing that with almost any other EV from any other brand. The pre-sale email for the new Niro EV somehow ended up in my spam folder and I never saw it, so I can’t even get on the list for 2024, 2023 being fully sold out. I am now patiently awaiting the email from VW for the ID.Buzz pre-sale.

ID Buzz allocations are likely all spoken for… dealer used inventory

My sales rep at Toyota said the GR86s production has been massively cut and Fiat announced they might be selling the 500 EV here… has me thinking

North American Buzz pre-sales have yet to begin. Barring some form of insider shenanigans — unlikely, considering the microscopes focusing on VW — we'll only be able to reserve one through VolksClick.
