Why do you need to look at your phone when you are driving? It is a distraction and dangerous. You have buttons on your steering wheel to handle calls and you have a navigation screen much higher in the dash. You have Apple and Android integration too which again, is much safer than looking at your phone way down in your cup holder.

So again, why? What is the benefit? I see only risk associated with this and zero benefit.

Maybe the OP is just as frustrated with the in-dash screen & Mini navigation as I am & made his own solution.

I didn’t realize it would be so triggering. The purpose is to secure the phone when it is charging since the signature trim has no Qi charging or sufficient storage in the armrest. I have to plug into usb and the cupholder allows the phone to rattle around. This secures the phone and wireless CarPlay is still being used…safe!

I had a similar 3D printed cup-holder mount that would allow charging via USB in my current car. It was supposed to fit the lightning end and allow me to just drop it in, though that didn't pan out (man, how lazy am I that I couldn't just plug in to USB! :)). I do agree with the likely temptation that comes with any device that puts your phone screen facing you. If you hate the MINI interface, wireless Apple CarPlay is great and provides several excellent options for Navi. And seeing the insane number of people texting/using their phones while driving I appreciate the limitations and decreased distractions provided by phone-controlled interfaces.

But, do what works for you, hopefully it provides assistance and not hindrance!

I think it's super cool! How do you route the power cable? Is there an opening under the channel that holds your phone through which you're able to route a Lightning cable, or are you using a MagSafe charging cable?

That's an excellent point -- the MagSafe would make it perfect! That's why my Lightning failed!

I like it and can see printing myself something similar when my car gets here. I seem to always have a water bottle or coffee so I may stow the phone in a rear cup holder.

3D printed cup insert for my iPhone. The signature models have an armrest that is too narrow for the phone so I had this made.View attachment 15007 View attachment 15008

Cool idea and execution. But, for those without access to 3D printers or (like me) who have only an Android smartphone, consider this product (post #67 in thread) first spotted and recommended about 18 months ago by @F14Scott. I bought this from Amazon and installed it -- works wonderfully for my Android phone in my MINI SE, and even charges the phone wirelessly through the phone's add-on case!

I don't need to look at my phone when driving because I use Apple CarPlay, but it would be nice to have it secured in a holder, rather than rattling around in the tray in front of the cup holders.

This. I've even dislodged my phone from the front tray on a couple of sharp turns. This type of holder would probably prevent that problem.
