$1500 windshield!

I got a stone chip a few weeks ago. I could see the "starburst" of the impact, above the rear view mirror, in the black-dotted area.

This morning I noticed that the chip has now become a crack, snaking around the upper part of the windshield, probably 10-12" in total length.

Went online with my insurance (Progressive,) and filed a claim for windshield replacement. It linked me to SafeLite, which didn't have the Clarity in their system, and substituted a 2018 Civic on their form, even with having my VIN. So, I called to get that fixed. After some time on the phone (they were very apologetic about the delays,) they told me that they will have to order the windshield directly from Honda, and will let me know the status as things progress. On my policy, it is a $50 deductible.

I used to live in Kentucky, and the free glass replacement was nice. The $50 deductible isn't bad, and I can live with that. Just curious as to how long this ordeal will take.
 
Crap, mines need to be replaced too. An opposing car and me were going about 35 mph each, then I heard something hit my windshield. Checked it out and it looked like a very small rock chip that immediately created a single crack about 6" now grown to 18" after 24 hours. Man, I wished these windshield would be more resilient!!!

Well, my wife's Pilot windshield cracked because the wiper fell and hit the glass when I was changing the wiper. Over $1k to replace it and re-aim the camera. That was a very expensive wiper :(

BEWARE SAFELITE! I was referred to Safelite via USAA. Had the same problem with the car being labeled a Civic. Had to make multiple calls to fix that issue. Then, when I brought the car in, they told me they could recalibrate the Honda Sensing camera behind the RV mirror for the new glass. I picked up the car and they were going to let me walk out thinking all was OK, but I remembered to ask about the camera. “Oh, we didn’t do that because it isn’t a Civic and we aren’t trained on the Clarity”. So I got to make another appointment at Honda for that, but billed to Safelite. Then I found a defect in the installation which led to a warranty appointment after which they ordered a new gasket FOR A CIVIC so I had to reschedule that appointment and then go to Honda again. Not to mention they did not clean up after themselves after the first job. It didn’t matter how many times I told the people at the shop and the people on the phone it was not a Civic, they could not get it right.

Yes, I am aware there are going to be some challenges with this. That's why I called them as soon as I saw the Civic info. The guy I spoke with seemed to be on top of this. We'll see...

First windshield I have needed replaced in 20 or more years.

I had my Clarity windshield replaced by Safelite with Honda glass but they do not realign the camera. Kind of a pain. But also beware if aftermarket glass does get introduced. My dealer wasn’t going to touch the camera if I hadn’t had Honda glass put back in.
 
I just had my windshield replaced today. There was a 2 foot long crack on the passenger side that appeared suddenly!! Bizarre! Safelite replaced the windshield and did a great job. However, they wanted to replace with an aftermarket ($750) because my Costco insurance wouldn't approve the Honda OEM ($1700). Then I was told by Safelite that Honda would not calibrate the camera if it was an aftermarket windshield. So Costco relented and approved the Honda windshield. Honda charges $250 to recalibrate the camera. I think my insurance covers this. UGH. However, the place where I got my windows tinted said that 80% of the time if the windshield is installed properly it doesn't need re-calibrating. The only way to tell is to initiate the LKAS and see if it works correctly. If not, I'll get an error message. I have yet to do this because I'm not suppose to get it wet for 2 days. (it's suppose to rain here)
 
During a three-year lease I had to replace the windshield on a VW Golf four times - including a week before the end of the lease - all because of flying rocks on the Interstate. Reading all of the Clarity windshield horror stories on this and other forums, I added full-replacement windshield coverage to my insurance policy for $32/year.
 
I just tested the camera on my new windshield for LKAS. THe LKAS goes on and recognizes the highway lines but the car doesn't stay centered. Oddly, the LKAS never did stay exactly centered but with the windshield replacement the car pulls to the right with the LKAS. Guess it needs recalibrating. Called my insurance and I will pay the $250 and will be reimbursed. I'm calling insurance again tomorrow and gonna add 100% coverage for windshield replacement. Living in the desert, there are sandstorms and flying pebbles on the freeways. My car is only 2 years old with 40,000 mi and the windshield pitted on the verge of being annoying.

Be careful here... All we have heard (so far) is that there IS NO aftermarket windshield.
We have seen multiple reports that SafeLite looks in their database and finds a part number...
When they procure it however, it turns out to be a Civic windshield (which of course is totally wrong).
Unless they have fixed their incorrect database, I suspect that there still is no aftermarket option (and maybe never will be).
 
Safelite also told me that they can calibrate the camera. However, the Safelite here in Palm Springs does not have the correct equipment for Claritys. I took my car to Honda this morning to have it calibrated and was told that the camera is not just for LKAS. It works in tandem with the radar and cruise control. They also told me that there is no aftermarket windshield for the Claritys. Apparently, Safelite lies? I also called my insurance to ask about zero deduction on a windshield. It's only offered in some states....thankfully CA is one of them. It's $25/every 6 months. Not bad all all.

who is your insurance? I have Geico and they don't have a windshield only. I have to get the whole comp thing.
 
"Ameriprise" which is through Costco. Cheapest auto insurance I've ever had. I was paying $1500 every 6 months for 2 cars with Farmers/21st Century. Switched to Costco which is $880 every 6 months. Just added zero deduction for windshield for only $50 more for both cars.

That's a good rate. I think I'm getting something similar with Geico, of course it depends on various factors, but wife and I both have clean records and older cars.
