Tesla despite the FUD pushing the Tesla Model C as of late, has said it will not do an ID type vehicle- not when Model 3 plus autonomy makes the Model 3 the ideal size for safety and other concerns. Its understandable that VW might try the bottom of the market because Tesla decimates everyone at the top of the market. As for quality Tesla is better quality than the German stuff- its power train is way way way more reliable than any German ICE and it is BMW and Fords that catch on fire while parked- so much for German quality. And again this difference shows because Tesla dominates the top of the market and is taking the bottom of the market. All that is left is the bottom of the market.
Now for the price point and the accustomed EU market it might make a difference but Tesla will likely sell a sub $30K Model 3 by that time the VW ID gets rolling and it will be worth the 7K premium and likely do to the ID what its done to the Volt. You an listen to VW's blather about why its not bringing the VW ID to the US claiming that customers won't buy the form factor but that's just because it saw what Tesla did to the Bolt (even against fail convincingly GM.) VW tries to say this about the segment but its not like Honda Civics don't sell. Maybe they are afraid of Honda too as its introducing a compact
