Caution as replication of this early report is needed. However, it is consistent with how virus RNA can change rapidly:

The variant known as B.1.1.529 has been detected in small numbers in South Africa, WHO officials said.

South African scientist Tulio de Oliveira said in a media briefing held by the South Africa Department of Health on Thursday that the variant contains a “unique constellation” of more than 30 mutations to the spike protein, the component of the virus that binds to cells.

    If these results are replicated:
    1. Masks, isolation, and quarantine will be the first line of defense.
    2. Rapid development of mRNA vaccines for new spikes.
    3. Monoclonal antibodies, new versions.
    4. Other treatments.
As for those claiming a 'right' to be virus cultures and spreaders, go to Brazil where such practices are encouraged.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease doctor and the president's chief medical adviser, said on Sunday that it's inevitable that the omicron variant of the coronavirus will be detected in the U.S.

While no cases of the variant have been detected in the U.S. so far, there have been cases detected in Botswana, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Israel, the Netherlands, Australia and Hong Kong.

"As we all know, when you have a virus that has already gone to multiple countries, inevitably it will be here," Fauci said on ABC's This Week. "The question is: Will we be prepared for it?"
