Agree with you, but manufacturers will either take responsibility to service their products or arrange for independent service. We know Tesla failed miserably at that, remain to be seen how Rivian deals with it.

  3. Was at a dealer yesterday for some service on my Kona EV, and they had an Ioniq 5 there, Preferred RWD. It was a deep blue/grey colour, very nice. Not sure if it was Lucid Blue or another colour, but I really liked it. Anyway talked to the salesperson there and he offered me a test drive. Gave me the keys and the wife and I took it out.

Very nice driving car, quieter than my Kona, and a lot more room of course. Stepped on the pedal to test power, and it was good, but I think my Kona is actually quicker, probably because of the extra weight of the Ioniq 5. I thought the interior was a little bland, too Tesla-like with the two big monitors. In fairness, this was not the Ulitmate trim, which is what I would pick. But maybe I am still stuck in old school, preferring the traditional cockpit style interiors.

When I brought it back, the salesperson wanted me to put in a pre-order even though my Ultimate trim may not be available until 2023. So I asked him what my Kona EV would be worth in a trade-in. He said they just did a trade-in with a 2020 Kona EV sitting in the lot, and said that used ones are very hot right now. He went in and talked to his sales manager, and said they couldn't give me a trade-in price just yet, but then he offered to pay me $36K cash right now, if I was willing to give it up early. After subsidies and discounts, I only paid 42K for it 3 years ago, so I thought that wasn't bad. And I would be able to get subsidies all over again on the new one.

But when I went home, I looked on the dealer's website what they were asking for that 2020 Kona. I was shocked to see $47K. The 2020 is identical to my 2019, except I have a brand new battery just 3000 kms ago.

Maybe I should put my Kona on the open market and see what I can get...haha.

Problem is, I still really like my Kona, perfect size, and very nimble car. Plus I like the looks, and interior. Really have no reason to sell it.

What about the Kona battery fire issues in Canada? How is LG Energy Solution dealing with it?

  5. That is now old history. I have a brand new battery (issue fixed), just 3000 kms ago. And the Kona range is as good or better than the Ioniq 5, just doesn't charge as fast. Don't get me wrong. I like the Ioniq 5, and if I didn't have an EV, it would be tops on my list.

With a new battery, this is a keeper!

  8. You will have to have the new vehicle registered under a different name, if you once already received the BC rebate after 2019:
IS THERE AN REBATE LIMIT PER INDIVIDUAL?
Yes, an individual may only receive one (1) rebate during the lifespan of the program.

I got caught on this one when I traded in my 2018 model. they changed it in 2019;)

  9. Oh really, didn't know that. So if I registered it under my wife's name, would that work?

  11. Thanks. That is important info to know.

When is that Ioniq 3 coming out? It might be better suited for us, size wise. Would want the Ultimate, though,... I like a little bling.

RP the reason you found the Preferred RWD to be slower than your Kona electric is that the 0-100 km/h is 8.5 sec compared 7.6 sec of your vehicle. The Ultimate trim because of the AWD Long Range brings it to 5.2 sec.

We are different when it comes to interiors, I want ultra modern that it is obvious that it is an EV and not ICE. Everyone is different so as you prefer traditional cockpit, that is okay too.

If everyone had to drive the same vehicle, it be very boring, same if we got stuck to only black like the Model T Ford.

Whether you get Ioniq 5 Ultimate or Ioniq 3 Ultimate, main thing is that you are happy.

  14. Dealer called again yesterday, and they really want my Kona. Previous offer (straight cash, not trade-in) was 36K. Now they are willing to offer more. I asked for another offer, but wouldn't give it to me over the phone, and want me to come in again. But he did say name your price, not sure what that means. Problem is he wants it on paper.

Now am wondering just how much they are willing to pay for it. Maybe they already have a buyer for that other used Kona on their lot ($48K), and being a 2020 does not have a new battery. They know that my battery was replaced just 3000 kms ago.

Was not expecting to play this game at this point in time. And if I sold the Kona, and not having a replacement 2nd car coming soon, my wife would kill me. But just having had another issue with the Kona (unexpected wheel alignment), does make me wonder how long I want to keep it. And once more new EVs are out in about a year, used value for it could plummet. So that is my dilemma.

Now if there was an Ultimate AWD available, my decision would be easy and quick. But have a big problem waiting for another year.

I looked again at other EV cars available sooner, and none ticked the boxes like the I5, not even close.

Here's a video with hints about the upcoming Ioniq 3--and the Ioniq 1 and Ioniq 6 Hyundai is planning, too.

  16. A dilemma - if they'll pay you enough that your time with the car was free, it might be worthwhile. On the other hand any second car now will be older and suffer by comparison (if you can find one).

  17. Interesting, thanks. They mention that the Ioniq 3 might be announced in mid 2022, which sound sooner than I would have expected. Size wise it sounds good, but have to see what it looks like too. I do like the Ioniq 5 looks, and that Lucid Blue colour.

Sounds good, let me know what the price gets up to if you go that route.
How many KM's did you have on it before the battery swap?
Yes very hard to sell it when you don't have another replacement option immediately. It's hard for value to plummet when the supply chain is still constrained, but could you have imagined getting back what you paid after 3 years?!!

  19. Well, I got it up to 39 today, and they said that was their best offer. I have 43K kms on it, and battery was replaced 4000 kms ago. With discounts and rebates, I paid 42 for it 3 years ago. Of course there were taxes and pdi/freight on top of that, too, and I would have to pay for that again. Plus the rebates are $2000 less, too now. So not quite enough to go through with it at this time. If I got over 40, maybe.

I still have a wife problem, though. Talked to her again, and she is still against it (with having to share 1 car for a year). Got the "well, you always do what YOU want anyway" from her, so that might be tough to live with for a full year.

lol yes you don't want to live with that for a year. I'm sure you could get them up to 40 or 42, as long as they can make any profit they would go for it. Keep an eye out on the first batches of IONIQ 5's, might be some dealers that end up getting extras. It happened during the first phase of the Kona also.

  21. Dunno about you, but I *like being married*.
    That sounds unequivocal.

  22. Wow sounds like a great deal. I would be seriously tempted to walk away for a nearly zero sum cost of driving for 3 years. Seriously when does that ever happen.
I don't see why you can't put in an order of an Ionic 5, worst case scenario you are into it for a $500 refundable deposit and you can cancel at anytime. In the meantime put your feelers out to various dealers, as e-shark mentioned there will be surplus I5s popping up as they sell down demo cars and inevitable order cancellations show up. You are in a perfect location to take advantage of such a situation.

The wife problem I can't help you with. My wife knows the more I talk about something the more likely I will do it. I think I have learned over the last 3 decades that as long as my plan sounds reasonable and I give her plenty of warning we are golden. :)

  23. I visited another Hyundai dealer today, and my best offer is now up to 40K. But the wife is still dead set against it, even after explaining the financial side of it and ending up with a brand new car, that is better yet. She was with me when we test drove the Ioniq 5, but crazy as it may seem, she still really likes the Kona.

Talked to my son (Tesla owner), and he is totally with me on selling the Kona and living with one car for a year. And he is working on my wife, too, so together we'll try to wear her down. Trouble is she has also talked to a couple of her friends, and unfortunately they are on her side.

Yes, I think I will put in a pre-order for the I5, just haven't got around to it yet.
