China is a key market for any OEM, but it's not an easy nut to crack. Despite hurtles and some early setbacks, Tesla seems to be continually gaining steam. They recently put out a video featuring some of their customers there talking about their cars.

On a side note, I was a little surprised to see an owner in Tibet right at the very beginning of the video. I guess it's a savvy move if you're trying to get on the good side of Chinese officials. For those of us who still have problems with the annexation of Tibet, its cultural suppression, and the issues surrounding the Dalai Lama, it's a bit of a shocker, though. I might not stop me from buying, but the political stances of companies matter when I make purchase decisions. YMMV

It would be nice to see more Tesla in China, beautiful car and with its air filter is the best car to drive in heavy smog whether in California or in Beijing. NYT reported that Tesla is in talks of setting a factory in Shanghai, but it will require a JV partner and transfer of technology to the JV, which is highly unlikely. Currently Tesla in China is a true sign of wealth since it costs much more to import it, and Tesla is capable of reaching city limits speeds faster than Ferrari (and looks more modest to the common eye). There have been some quips in the car industry that Mr. Musk will reach Mars before Tesla will be manufactured in China.
